Sarah Needleman of the Wall Street Journal has a few words of warning for the job seekers; in an effort to sell yourself to a potential employer, make sure not to go over the over the top. In these times of increased competition for a smaller number of jobs, the candidates that will stand out will not be the ones that talk the loudest, but those whose achievements talk for them.

  • Tone it down – yes, yes, everyone says that you should be ready to sell yourself hard; however, the line between confidence and cockiness can be very easily crossed.
  • Remember that modesty and giving credit to others can resonate with hiring managers that are usually bombarded with wild claims of accomplishments.
  • Be prepared to back it up – if you make any claims of achievements, you should be prepared to provide some form of evidence – in the form of actual figures or awards that you have obtained as a result of your work.
