Most of you have heard about the magic of networking. Yes, it’s often through connections that people get jobs, careers go in positive directions, or that life generally sails more smoothly. Often those ‘lucky breaks’ aren’t exactly luck.
Well, even if we all know these things, I suspect there are some out there who have concluded that they are just not cut out for this kind of thing. Perhaps, “I’m not the networking type”. Well, I would like to suggest that networking is a skill that can be developed with practice and strategy. In fact, even the shyest amongst us have networks already – it’s just a matter of building on them.
This short article written by Phyllis Korkki, for the New York Times, 12/21/2008, p8, gives some good, quick tips, and makes a convincing case for what you already know but may be avoiding.
For more on this topic, we have lots of books and digital resources on networking. Here’s but one example:
The networking survival guide : get the success you want by tapping into the people you know, by Diane Darling, 2003.
Here’s something to help you build your confidence in your networking skills. Also, get click-happy with our eLibrary Networking Career Guide.
The Career Resource Library is located at One Palace Road, Room P304E. Come by for career information, or to make use of our computers and beautiful study space.
