In case you have not heard, the American Library Association (ALA) has created a “Getting a Job in a Tough Economy” toolkit for those seeking help in searching, finding, and securing a job in a library. The site, which is meant to be a “one-stop resource,” provides job searching resources for an “especially tough job market.” This section contains links such as “How do I plan a job search strategy,” “What do I do if I’m laid off,” and “Where are the jobs?”
There is also information for job searching in general including how to prepare a resume or cover letter, and how to negotiate a salary and benefits once you have been offered a job. Beyond job resources, there are also podcasts and stories from librarians and support staff on topics such as taking substitute jobs, interviewing, and creativity in job search strategy.
This site is a work in progress and will continue to be updated. Anyone who has advice, stories, or suggestions can email them to gaj@ala.org. Those taking advantage of the site are also encouraged to subscribe to the Get a Job! RSS feed.
