If you’re fresh out of college and having trouble finding a job, it may be time to consider a change of scenery. Many new graduates enter the working world with high hopes for finding their dream job, but this isn’t always possible. BusinessWeek suggests that new graduates should be open to job opportunities outside their area code. By examining job postings, salary rates, cost-of-living information, and unemployment rates, BusinessWeek has compiled a list of the thirty top cities for finding employment opportunities.

At the top of that list? Indianapolis, Phoenix, Denver, Atlanta, and Philadephia. While you may not think of these cities immediately, they tend to offer low cost-of-living and higher than average job opportunities. (Don’t worry too much if Indianapolis seems worlds away; Boston makes the list at number eight.) The key is to be flexible in your job search. The right job for you may not be right down the street. It may not even be the job you were looking for in the first place!

Job competition will remain high wherever you go, so it is important to view every challenge as an opportunity. A difficult job market in Boston? That’s your chance to experience a new city. Few postings in your field? Then it’s time to try something new and expand your skill set.

For further assistance in finding your new home, check out the CRL’s Relocation Guide. Let FindYourSpot.com choose a new zip code for you based on the way you live your life and then use Sterling’s Best Places to learn more about your new hometown. All this and more in the Simmons College Career Resource Library.
