Historical Resources

Simmons College was founded in 1902 "to furnish to women instruction and training in such branches of art, science, and industry as may be serviceable in enabling them to acquire a livelihood." The Archives and Special Collections holdings reflect the unique professional character of the College and its early commitment to training women in nursing, secretarial/management work, retailing, library science, social work, home economics, and teaching. The department is open to students, faculty, staff, and alumnae of the College, as well as other interested researchers.

Researchers interested in the early history of Simmons College are encouraged to familiarize themselves with readings such as the College history from 1899 to 1933, Delayed By Fire by Kenneth L. Mark (Concord: Rumford Press, 1945), before investigating original source materials. Delayed By Fire is available in the circulating collection of the Simmons College Library and is also available through interlibrary loan. Interested researchers may also consult an index to Delayed by Fire prepared by Archives' staff in 1987.

The Archives staff has prepared a number of resources highlighting Simmons College history:
