Finding Articles

Journal articles are available in two formats: online full-text and print. Please keep in mind that only a fraction of the titles that Simmons subscribes to are available online and most of these only provide coverage for the last five to ten years. This is particularly true of archival journals, most of which are available only in print. Therefore, it is very important to consider both online and traditional print articles when conducting your research.

Online Articles

Simmons OPAC

  1. Connect to the Simmons Library online catalog.
  2. Conduct a title search for the journal title.
  3. Click on the entry that has the word Online next to the title.
  4. Select a database by clicking on the appropriate title.
  5. Run an author or title search to find the journal article.

Serials Solutions

This is an excellent tool for finding out whether a particular article or journal is available online. With Serials Solutions you can navigate directly to an article if you have a citation, browse for a journal by name if you aren't sure of the exact title, or browse to find an online journal by subject.

  1. Connect to the GSLIS Collection homepage at http://my.simmons.edu/collections/gslis/.
  2. Launch Serials Solutions by clicking on the Finding Fulltext Articles link below All GSLIS Resources
  3. If you have the citation for the article
    • Click on the Citation Linker link at the top of the page
    • Fill in as much of the citation as you have.
    • Click the Look Up button
  4. If you are not sure of the title of the journal, you can browse by title.
    • Click on the first letter of the first word in the journal title and select the journal title from the list.
    • Click on the Look Up Article link, fill in the form, and click the Look Up button.
  5. If you are looking for an online journal, choose a subject under Browse ejournal by subject.
  6. When you have search results, click on the Article link to go directly to the article. If there is no Article link, click on the Journal link or the name of the database and run a search or navigate to the article.

Print Articles

New Spring 2007! As distance learners, GSLIS @ Mount Holyoke students may use the Library’s new ILLiad software to request all articles, Simmons-owned or otherwise. The following instructions reflect the new procedures.

  1. Connect to the Simmons Library online catalog or WorldCat via the Quicklist on the GSLIS Collection home page to determine whether or not Simmons subscribes to the journal.
  2. Click on the Request Interlibrary Loan link from the OPAC home page or from the WorldCat entry.
  3. Log in to your ILL account using your Simmons network user name and password.
    • The first time you access ILLiad, you will be asked to create an account. Make sure to select “Graduate Student - Distance Learner” from the Status dropdown and “Graduate School of Library & Information Science - Mt. Holyoke” from the Department dropdown.
    • Once you account is created, you need only log into ILL
  4. At the main menu you will have two options for requesting articles. Select either Request an Article Not Owned by Simmons or Request an Article Owned by Simmons and fill in the citation information. Requests for Simmons-owned items will be routed to the GSLIS Library Assistant for Mount Holyoke; all others will be routed to ILL.
  5. A scanned copy of the article will be e-mailed to you as soon as it is available.
