GSLIS Toolkit: More than Z

Business Sources

In your work at GSLIS and in your professional careers, you will frequently be required to step outside of the LIS world and work with resources in other disciplines. One such discipline is business and management.

From an undergraduate who wants to compare the GNP of Japan, China, and India to an investor who is interested in forecasts for the pharmaceutical industry to a consultant looking for details of the political climate in Thailand, your patrons will be asking you for information that is readily available from online business sources.

There is an amazing variety of information and features available in the world of online business sources. We are accustomed to working with databases that are mainly simple repositories of articles, book chapters, and proceedings. In some business databases, with a couple of mouse clicks you can generate a custom report of leading companies in the tech sector or create a pie chart comparing personal incomes across countries in Latin America.

In this workshop, we will concentrate on three areas of interest:

Who's hot? Industry-wide reports and surveys of broad sectors like pharmaceuticals or home repair. Who are the top players? What is the outlook?

Playing the numbers: Look at publicly-traded corporations from all possible angles from stock prices and price-to-earnings ratio to debt analysis.

Where in the world...? Find out everything about countries or regions that might influence an investment decision. What's the weather in February? Is the political outlook stable?
