Workshops

OPAC & Beyond

OPAC is library-speak for Online Public Access Catalog, but there is much more to the Library’s web site than the catalog.

Objectives:

  • Familiarize yourself with the online catalog & its search options
  • Organize your thoughts and manipulate your search queries ( Keyword Grid, Boolean Operators, Truncation, Limiters, etc. )
  • Optimize your use of special features in the online catalog (View Patron Record, Interlibrary Loan, Request a Hold, Mark Records to Print, Email or Save)
  • Introduce you to key resources on the GSLIS Collection Web Page

Date and times will be announced in YARR as soon as they are available.

Times not convenient? Contact Linda Watkins at 617.521.2824 or gslisworkshops@simmons.edu to schedule a time that works for you.

Who is LISA, Anyway?

Meet LISA & her friends Library Literature & LISTA up close and personal. LISA (Library and Information Science Abstracts), Library Literature, and LISTA (Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts) are databases that index the literature of librarianship from the mid 1960’s to the present. These databases are used to find full text, citations, and/or abstracts of journal articles, books, book reviews, reports, research, and proceedings.

Objectives:

  • How to Search – Brainstorming, keyword grid, Boolean operators, keyword vs. subject searching, and using online thesauri (i.e. controlled vocabulary)
  • Where to Search – Advanced searching in LIS databases highlighting both the common features and special searching options in each database
  • Retrieving What You Found
  • Using ArticleNow!
  • Emailing/printing/saving

Date and times will be announced in YARR as soon as they are available.

Times not convenient? Contact Linda Watkins at 617.521.2824 or gslisworkshops@simmons.edu to schedule a time that works for you.

RefWorks

RefWorks is a Web-based bibliographic database manager that allows you to create your own personal database by importing references from OPACs, text files, or online databases. You can even use these references in writing papers to automatically format the in-text citations and the bibliography in seconds.

Objectives:

  • Set up a RefWorks Account
  • Create and Manage Folders
  • Import Records into RefWorks
  • Insert Citations into Your Paper
  • Format Footnotes and Bibliography

This workshop is offered weekly through the library, times to be announced. In the meantime, contact Contact Dixie Foster at dixie@simmons.edu or call 617.521.2828 to schedule a personal tutorial.
