Getting Started

Before jumping in and looking for research, it is a good idea to have a refined topic and to know a little about it. Start with broad resources like encyclopedias, bibliographies, and handbooks to start to get a sense of what is available on your topic in the universe of information.

  • Academic Onefile
    Contains over 8,000 multi-disciplinary academic journals, the majority in full-text, including numerous education journals.  Content begins in 1980.

  • Academic Search Complete
    A multi-disciplinary periodical database that provides full text for over 8000 publications and includes indexing and abstracting in both scholarly and popular content.  Subject areas include social sciences, humanities, and education. Coverage starts in 1965.
  • CIAO
    Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship that includes working papers from university research institutes, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.   Articles about  education are international in scope and even U.S. topics have an international viewpoint.  Coverage starts in 1991.

  • Education Abstracts and Fulltext Journals
    Contains more than 550 publications on education - including primary, secondary, and university-level topics with nearly 300 in full text. Coverage starts in 1986.

  • Education Professional Development Collection
    Contains 700 journals on education, many of them full text.  Includes more than 520 peer-reviewed education journals such as: Chronicle of Higher Education, Booklist, Education, Education Digest, Education Week, Educational Leadership, High School Journal, Journal of Education, Journal of Higher Education, Journal of Educational Research, Journal of Learning Disabilities, Phi Delta Kappan, Reading Teacher, School Library Journal. This database also contains more than 200 educational reports. Full text coverage from 1965 to the present.

  • ERIC
    The Educational Resource Information Center (ERIC) provides full text of more than 2,200 digests along with citations and abstracts from over 1,000 educational and education-related journals. The database provides access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index.  Coverage is from 1966 to the present.

  • Expanded Academic ASAP
    This database contains publications from a wide variety of disciplines including many education resources.  Many sources have full text and images. Coverage is from 1980.

  • JSTOR
    This database offers archived scholarly journals that are both multidisciplinary and discipline-specific collections.  While the number of education publications are relatively few, some date back to 1930.  This is not a current issues database since coverage ends 2-5 years from the present.

  • Library Literature
    While publications in this database provides abstracts and full text covering the subjects of library and information science it also includes a number of relevant education topics such as school libraries, school and public libraries and school archives.   Included are journals, conference proceedings, library school theses, and book reviews. Coverage is from 1984 to the present; full-text coverage begins in 1994.

  • LISA
    Library and Information Science Abstracts Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) provides abstracts for the field of librarianship and information science but includes many related areas of public schools and education topics such as testing,  technology, school libraries, teacher training, curriculum and instructional materials, and literacy teaching.  Coverage is from 1969 to the present.

  • LISTA
    Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA) database provides abstracts for the field of library and information science including educational topics such as school libraries, school programs, elementary and secondary school, tests and measurements, materials reviews including website reviews and 4500 reviews of educational videos and DVD’s. Coverage dates back to the mid-1960s.

  • Project MUSE
    Scholarly sources covering the humanities and social sciences including valuable studies and research in the field of education.  Coverage is from 1995 to the present.

  • PsycInfo
    This database covers education with a psychology and social science slant with over 1,900 leading psychological, psychiatric, and related publications. This database indexes journals, dissertations, book chapters, books, technical reports, and other documents from 1887 to the present.  While PsycInfo is primarily a citation database, Simmons subscribes to a special enhanced version that includes the full text for articles from about 300 publications.
  • Social Sciences Full Text
    A peer reviewed bibliographic database of abstracts and full text articles in interdisciplinary fields from social science journals.   Education topics are national and international in scope and related topics include community health & medical care, family studies, gender studies, minority studies, planning & public administration, psychiatry, psychology, public welfare, social work, sociology, and urban studies.  Abstracting coverage begins in January 1994; full text coverage begins in January 1995.

  • Sociological Abstracts
    This abstracting database is a primary resource the latest research in sociology and related disciplines such as education in the social and behavioral sciences. The database draws information from an international selection of over 2,600 journals and other serials publications, plus conference papers, books, and dissertations.  Coverage is from 1963 to the present.

 

Getting Fulltext

Because not all indexes are fulltext--or 100% fulltext--you may have to elsewhere to find an article for which you have a citation. Consult the resources below to find out how to get access to the articles you need.

    In addition to being a source for international articles on education, CIAO is also a great source for teaching materials including original case studies written by international affairs experts, course packs of background readings for history and political science classes, and features like the analysis of a bin Laden recruitment tape with video.

    An electronic library of printable teacher-handout material arranged by subject -- history, geography, science, and mathematics, for the middle, high school, and junior college curriculum. It contains maps, charts, pictures, diagrams, timelines and science experiments.

    A general reference database for children in grades 1-9 with full-text Lexile rated articles and images that are selected from thousands of domestic and international publications. Features include Current Events – full-text articles and graphics on timely domestic and international events; The World Almanac for Kids; Funk & Wagnalls & New Encyclopedia; Activities such as science experiments, craft projects, writing activities; Biographies of notable people; Country Facts; Maps of the World; Student Workbooks, Research Strategy Worksheet, and Educator's Guide.

Demographics and Statistics

Statistics and demographics are important to many research projects, but they can be hard to find. Try some of the resources below when looking for statistics. If you still cannot find what you need, contact a librarian.
