Getting Started

Before jumping in and looking for research, it is a good idea to have a refined topic and to know a little about it. Start with broad resources like encyclopedias, bibliographies, and handbooks to start to get a sense of what is available on your topic in the universe of information.

This is an encyclopedia which contains articles on a wide variety of topics, including terms, personages, organizations, historical events and contemporary women’s issues. Though the focus is women in the United States, many entries provide a Canadian perspective.

Women’s Studies Encyclopedia

The encyclopedia contains information about women from all fields and disciplines of study. The references included at the end of many of the articles are meant primarily to direct readers to works from which they may obtain a fuller explanation, more detailed information, or different perspective on a subject. The focus of the encyclopedia is the American experience.

Women’s Studies and Feminism: Guides to Information Sources

The purpose of this book is to offer background knowledge about resources, highlight major sources of information and offer techniques for finding information on women’s studies & feminism on an international level.

Nature of Woman: An Encyclopedia & Guide to the Literature

This source provides an overview of the philosophy and social studies literature on the nature of women. Fictional, historical or biographical material about women or written by women is not covered here. The encyclopedia provides introductions to arguments and conclusions on a wide range of Western thinkers. The main body of the text addresses issues with several hundred author and topic entries such that the topics are cross-referenced to the authors.

Encyclopedia of Women & Gender: Sex Similarities and Differences and the Impact of Society on Gender

The encyclopedia provides comprehensive coverage of a broad range of health, social, psychological and societal issues that encompass current research and scholarship on the psychology of women and gender. Across the articles attention is given to multicultural issues of diversity in human experience.

A multi-disciplinary periodical database that includes indexing and abstracting both scholarly and popular content covering academic areas including social sciences, humanities, education, information science,engineering, language and linguistics, arts and literature, medical science, and cultural studies.Some coverage goes as far back as 1965, and over 4,000 titles are included fulltext.

Alternative Press Index
Alternative Press Index, with international coverage beginning from 1991, is an interdisciplinary & comprehensive guide to nearly 300 alternative sources of information in the humanities & social sciences including radical and left periodicals, newspapers & magazines, in addition to, selected abstracts from research journals. API is updated quarterly.

Contemporary Women's Issues
Focused on timely, relevant, and meaningful information on women, this resource indexes more than 1,500 sources, both periodical and non-periodical. It covers from 1992 - present, including links to fulltext, providing access to global information in women in over 150 countries.

Family & Society Studies Worldwide Database
Covers popular issues as well as meeting the requirements of professionals in all fields of social work, social science and family practice. The scope is international including new areas of research and types of publications drawn from a wide range of social science disciplines including anthropology, sociology, psychology, demography, health sciences, education, economics, law, history, and social work.

Social Sciences Index
This guide to the literature of the social sciences indexes and abstracts content from over 350 key international, English-language periodicals in the social sciences. Covers 1983 - present.

Sociological Abstracts
This database indexes over 2,600 International journals and other serial publications. Coverage begins from 1963 and includes abstracts of conference papers, dissertations and books.

Getting Fulltext

Because not all indexes are fulltext--or 100% fulltext--you may have to elsewhere to find an article for which you have a citation. Once you have a citation for the article, follow the steps below for locating the entire fulltext of the article:

  • Search under the Title/Journal Title field in the library catalog for the title of journal in which your article is located
  • Click the journal title link, and you will see the holdings record for the journal. The record will tell you what issue dates are available in print, microfilm, and/or online. If the article is available in print or microfilm, note the call number for the journal. If the article is available online, click the link to go to the journal in the database that contains your article.
  • If your journal is not available, consider the other options listed or contact a librarian.
