African American Experience

The African American Experience is a unique compilation of Internet-accessible digital images of works published from 1693-1830, written by and about members of America's black populace. It is an ideal resource for individuals and students who wish to gain firsthand insight into black history in America.

Created by Readex in cooperation with the American Antiquarian Society, the African American Experience is a carefully chosen subset of works from Early American Imprints 1639-1819, one of the most important anthologies ever produced on microform and a staple resource in research library. The contents of the African American Experience extend beyond the limits of that coverage to include additional materials from 1820-1830. The collection includes digital images of imprints ranging from one-sheet broadsides and small pamphlets to books more than 400 pages in length.

The African American Experience seeks to integrate the works of the first black writers in this country with late 18th and early 19th century literature addressing blacks and slavery, including:

  • Produced by the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), AGELINE provides bibliographic coverage of social gerontology, which is the study of aging in psychological, health-related, social, and economic contexts.
  • The delivery of health care to the older population and its associated costs and policies is particularly well covered, as are consumer, employment, and public policy issues.

  • Access to ETOH requires a browser with frame capabilities.
Alt Health Watch
  • Alt Health Watch focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.
  • It offers public, university and medical library an immediate resource of nearly 50,000 articles from over 160 international, peer-reviewed and professional journals, magazines, reports, proceedings, and association and consumer newsletters (most from 1990 to the present), plus hundreds of pamphlets, booklets, special reports, original research and book excerpts.
  • In addition to the standard bibliographic citations, the database indexes each article by more than 225 subject categories, 16 article types and 11 publication types. Alternative Press Index and Alternative Press Index Archive
  • The most complete guide to alternative & radical media plus a guide to publishers' addresses.
  • The Alternative Press Index is widely regarded as the leading guide to the alternative press in North America. Citations are drawn from roughly 380 alternative, radical, and left publications, which report and analyze the practices and theories of cultural, economic, political, and social change.
  • The Alternative Press Index (1991-present) - is produced by the Alternative Press Center in Baltimore. API indexes all articles of 5 or more paragraphs, including: editorials, regular columns, essays, fiction; speeches, interviews, statistics, reprints; bibliographies, directories, resource lists; autobiographies, biographies, obituaries, memoirs; and reviews: book, film, record, TV, drama, arts, and multimedia. RLG's ArchiveGrid provide centralized access for searching and retrieval of archival finding aids that have been encoded using SGML and the emerging standard for Encoded Archival Description (EAD). The finding aids are indexed centrally at RLG but are supported in a distributed environment — some reside on a server at RLG, others are located on other servers around the world.

ArchiveGrid also includes access to RLG's AMC (Archival and Mixed Collections) file. AMC provides researchers with timely and comprehensive access to brief, high-level information for nearly half a million collections of manuscripts and archives, and has greatly enhanced the dissemination of information about the holdings in repositories around the world.

ARTstor is a digital library of nearly one million images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences with a set of tools to view, present, and manage images for research and pedagogical purposes.

The ARTstor Digital Library is used by educators, scholars, and students at a variety of institutions including universities, colleges, museums, public libraries, and K-12 schools. The Digital Library serves users both within the arts and in disciplines outside of the arts. This includes historians of art and architecture and others engaged in the visual arts, as well as individuals in fields as diverse as American Studies, Anthropology, Asian Studies, Classical Studies, Literary Studies, Medieval Studies, Music, Religious Studies, and Renaissance Studies, all of whom find the images in ARTstor to be relevant to their teaching and research.

Bibliography of the History of Art

Bibliography of Asian Studies

  • The on-line version of the Bibliography of Asian Studies (BAS) contains over 545,000 records on all subjects (especially in the humanities and the social sciences) pertaining to East, Southeast, and South Asia published worldwide from 1971 to the present. Through the 1991 printed version, the BAS included citations to Western-language periodical articles, monographs, chapters in edited volumes, conference proceedings, anthologies, and Festschriften, etc. Monographs published since 1992 have not been added to the database, and users seeking such monographs are urged to consult other general resources and databases (RLIN, OCLC, etc.).
  • The online BAS contains the full data of all of the printed editions of the BAS issued from the 1971 up to the 1991 edition (published 1997), as well as tens of thousands of entries compiled since. To quickly bridge the gap in coverage from 1991 to the present, the BAS staff have identified the most important 100+ periodicals in Asian Studies, and have indexed them on a priority basis in order to make their coverage as up-to-date as possible. Full information about the years of coverage of each and every journal is provided through the Journal Title Browse function. Various special projects have contributed substantial numbers of additional records to the database, thereby increasing the coverage of the BAS to include new and previously-excluded journals as well as eliminating gaps in the coverage of previously indexed periodicals.
  • The online BAS offers users various methods for seeking citations. In addition to using the powerful search function, users can browse by country-subject, or by journal title. A separate screen allows users to set their preferences for displaying and downloading data in different formats and character encodings. The BAS is updated regularly, with batch posting of thousands of new entries in each upload.

Biography and Genealogy Master Index
  • This database is a first stop index tool for learning where to look for biographical material on people from all time periods, geographical locations and fields of endeavor.

Biography Reference Bank

  • Wilson Biography Reference Bank Illustrated contains more than 46,000 biographies and obituaries and more than 20,000 photographs of the subjects.
  • Many of the biographies are enhanced with full text, abstracts, and citations from H. W. Wilson databases.
  • The biographies are searchable by name, profession, title, place of origin, gender, race/ethnicity, titles of works, date of birth, date of death, keyword, and presence of images.

Biography Resource Center

The Biography Resource Center is a comprehensive database of biographical information on more than 185,000 people from throughout history, around the world, and across all disciplines and subject areas. It combines approximately 300,000 biographies from respected Gale Group sources. The database also includes full-text articles from nearly 275 periodicals. Search for people based on one or more personal facts such as birth and death years and places, nationality, ethnicity, occupation or gender, or combine criteria to create a highly-targeted custom search path.

BIOSIS

  • A wide range of bioscience topics. 
  • Covers 350 of the basic core of life science journals most easily found in college and university library. These journals were chosen because they are written for non-biology majors and can be easily understood by undergraduates. 
  • The database includes popular science titles not covered in other BIOSIS databases. 

Black Thought and Culture

  • Black Thought and Culture contains 1297 sources with 1100 authors, covering the non-fiction published works of leading African Americans. Particular care has been taken to index this material so that it can be searched more thoroughly than ever before. Where possible the complete published non-fiction works are included, as well as interviews, journal articles, speeches, essays, pamplets, letters and other fugitive material.

Bloomberg

  • This powerful financial database covers over 150,000 public companies worldwide, as well as indexes, bonds, governments, and much more.

  • Children's Core Collection, A Selection Guide is a selective annotated list of fiction and nonfiction books and magazines for children from preschool through sixth grade, along with review sources and other professional aids for children's librarians and school media specialists.
  • Nonfiction works are classified by subject according to the Dewey Decimal Classification. Works of fiction, story collections, and picture books are designated Fic, S C, and E.

Choice Reviews

  • ChoiceReviews.online is the Internet version of the print magazine CHOICE: Current Reviews for Academic Library. Begun in 1964, CHOICE is published in printed magazine format monthly.

    CHOICE reviews significant current books and electronic resources of interest to those in higher education. Each year CHOICE publishes more than 6,500 reviews by subject experts.

    Launched on the Web in April 1999, ChoiceReviews.online provides Web access to the entire database of CHOICE reviews published since September 1988. The database is updated monthly, generally at mid-month, with reviews that will be printed in the next monthly issue of CHOICE. The newest reviews appear, arranged by academic discipline and broad cross-disciplinary topic, in Current Issue.They also are searchable by using Advanced Search, selecting by CHOICE Issue Date, and combining with various other criteria.

Chronicle of Higher Education

The Chronicle of Higher Education is the number one news and job-information source for college and university faculty members, administrators, and students.

Highlights of The Chronicle site:

the Web site is updated daily with the latest news in academe
  • all the text from the current issue including job ads is posted on Monday morning
  • a searchable archive of back issues is available dating back to September 1989
  • all commentary and essays from the weekly magazine, The Chronicle Review, are included

    CIAO

    Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO) is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

    CIAO is also widely-recognized source for teaching materials including original case studies written by leading international affairs experts, course packs of background readings for history and political science classes, and special features like the analysis of a bin Laden recruitment tape with video.

    All sections of CIAO are updated monthly.

     

    CINAHL

    • Provides authoritative coverage of the literature in nursing and allied health from 1982 - the present. 
    • Over 1200 English-language nursing and allied health journals are indexed along with virtually all publications from the American Nurses' Association and the National League for Nursing. 
    • Selected journals in biomedicine, consumer health, health sciences librarianship, behavioral sciences, and education are also included. 
    • CINAHL also provides references to healthcare books, book chapters, pamphlets, audiovisuals, nursing dissertations, educational software, selected conference proceedings, standards of professional practice, nurse practice acts, critical paths, and research instruments. 
    • Note: while CINAHL is primarily a citation database, Simmons subscribes to a special enhanced version that includes the full text for articles from about 250 publications.

    Index of Latin American journals in the social sciences and humanities

    • CLASE indexes documents published in Latin American journals specializing in the social sciences and humanities.
    • PERIODICA covers journals specializing in science and technology.
    • Offers access to more than 300,000 bibliographic citations from documents published in 2,600 scholarly journals published in the Spanish, Portuguese, French and English languages.
    • Contains information from articles, essays, book reviews, monographs, conference proceedings, technical reports, interviews and brief notes published in journals edited in 24 different countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as from publications that focus on Pan-American issues.

    Classification Web (LOC)

    • Access to the most up-to-date version of the LCC database. This database is updated by the Library of Congress weekly - with Class Web you will never be using an outdated version of a classification schedule.
    • Browse screens and search screens. Page through a classification schedule or search the schedules by captions, index terms, or even keywords. Do simple searches or complex Boolean searches.

    PAIS

    • The PAIS International database from CSA contains references to more than 553,300 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies, microfiche, Internet material, and more. Newspapers and newsletters are not indexed.

    • PsycARTICLES is a definitive source of searchable full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. The PsycARTICLES database covers general psychology and specialized, basic, applied, clinical and theoretical research.
    • The database contains more than 40,000 articles from 53 journals - 45 published by the American Psychological Association (APA) and 8 from allied organizations. It includes all journal articles, letters to the editor and errata from each journal. Coverage spans 1985 to present.

    PsycBooks

    • Launched in August 2004, PsycBOOKS is a full-text database of books and chapters in the American Psychological Association’s array of quality electronic databases. Each month books published by APA and classic books from other publishers are added to the database. In 2006, the database offering includes over 850 titles, including 100 out-of-print books from 1950-2002, approximately 120 archival resources in psychology, and the exclusive electronic release of the APA/Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of Psychology with over 1,500 authored entries.
    • The database can be searched in several ways, including by specifying keywords that may occur in the article title, abstract, or the full-text, or by author names and book titles. Each retrieved record has a link to the corresponding full-text chapter, which is almost always available in PDF format (so Adobe Acrobat reader is needed for viewing). Each record also has a link to the Table of Contents (TOC) for the book in which the chapter is published.
    • The database can also be searched for content of interest by browsing directly through the book titles and then clicking to the tables of contents for the respective chapters. In addition, an alerting function is available that sends an email to the user notifying them that a new book has been added to the database.

    • This online version of BS 1000 Universal Decimal Classification is produced by British Standards Publishing Sales Limited in association with British Standards Publishing Limited. It supersedes BS 1000M: Part 1: 1993 and Part 2: 1993.
    • The Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) was originally derived from Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and managed by the Institut International de Bibliographie (IIB), later known as the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID). It was first published, in French, from 1904 to 1907.
    • The preparation and publication of the English versions of UDC as BS 1000 was at the original joint request of the British Society for International Bibliography (BSIB) and the Association of Special Library and Information Bureaux (ASLIB), now amalgamated as Aslib, the Society for Information Management. It was approved by Lake Placid Education Foundation, New York, then proprietors of the Dewey Decimal Classification.     Women and Social Movements in the United States brings together books, images, documents, scholarly essays, commentaries, and bibliographies, documenting the multiplicity of women’s reform activities. Women and Social Movements contains the following resources:
    • 61 document projects that interpret and present documents, most of which are not otherwise available online. Each document project poses an interpretive question and provides a collection of documents that address the question. Altogether these document projects provide more than 1,645 documents, approximately 740 images, and over 600 links to other websites. They demonstrate that historical analysis is an interpretive process based on documents. Viewers of the site are encouraged to participate in that interpretive process. We expect to add twelve new document projects annually. Women and Social Movements is also now accepting submissions of document projects for consideration for online publication.
