GSLIS West Library News

Ebook access

We are constantly working to make ebooks more accessible to our remote learning communities, though it sometimes seems like an uphill battle. Here is an update on accessing our three major collections: Books24x7, ebrary, and netLibrary.

Should you encounter difficulties other than those noted below, please let Dixie know immediately. This is particularly important for those of you who have ebooks in your reserve lists.

Books24x7

Books24x7 is the only one of our ebook collections that requires users to create an account. The good news is that you no longer need to be on campus to request an account -- you need only email Dixie at dixie@simmons.edu.

Here's the procedure:

  • Email Dixie to request an account.
  • Dixie will email you back a copy of the member agreement. Reply to the message after adding "I agree" to the message.
  • On receipt of your email, Dixie will send your request to Books24/7.
  • Books24x7 will send an email directly to you with your password. Your account name will be the short form of your Simmons email address i.e., doej@simmons.edu rather than jane.doe@simmons.edu.
  • Log in to Books24x7 through the OPAC or from the All GSLIS Eresources list on the GSLIS Collection Home Page. You will be prompted to modify your password.

Remember! Your login is your entire email address, not just your login: doej@simmons.edu.

ebrary

The first thing you need to know is that ebrary plays well on a PC only with Internet Explorer. If you are a FireFox fan, you need to forego it for the ebrary experience

You can search for and access ebrary books without setting up an account. If you do set up an account, you can create a bookshelf, highlight text and save bookmarks. It can be a bit of a challenge, however. The first time you try to sign in to a new ebrary session, you will get a certificate error. If you accept the certificate, you can continue and sign in. Unfortunately, you need to repeat this process every time you launch Internet Explorer.

netLibrary

As far as I know, there are no current issues with netLibrary, so check it out.

Reserves and Article Requests

Reminder! Honor reserves

Physical reserves (books, videos, etc.) are available in the GSLIS West office in the Village Commons.

To see what is on reserve for your course, go to the Simmons OPAC at http://library.simmons.edu/ and select Course or Professor. All GSLIS West courses will look like this: LIS 403-20 GSLIS West.

Please remember to track your usage on the bookstrap. It gives us an idea of how effective the reserve program is for you.

Questions, comments, suggestions? Email dixie@simmons.edu.

Simplified! Request ALL print articles through ILL

As a community of distance learners, members of the GSLIS West community may use the Library’s ILLiad software to request all articles, Simmons-owned or otherwise. All you need do is identify your department as GSLIS West when you set up your ILL account. To check your current setup, go to ILL and click on Change Your Information from the left navigation bar.

Questions? Contact Dixie Foster at dixie@simmons.edu, call 617-521-2828, or Skype DixieAtSimmons.
