GSLIS West

GSLIS Toolkit

What is it?

The GSLIS Toolkit is a continuing program of workshops designed to help you with your professional careers in the LIS world as well as with your academic work while you are at Simmons. The Toolkit covers a wide range of topics from basic Boolean logic and searching skills to standard tools like PowerPoint and HTML to specific tools like RefWorks (a personal bibliographic citation manager) and Photoshop.

Just starting out?

At the start of the Spring and Fall term, the GSLIS West Library Assistant offers a full day GSLIS Tookit: Foundations targeted at incoming students. It is held on a Sunday soon after classes begin and will give you a grounding in using the Simmons OPAC to best advantage, getting help from a wide variety of sources, familiarity with the standard LIS online databases, and managing your personal bibliography.

Returning students are of course welcome, too!

Foundations is planned for the Sunday following orientation for Spring and Fall terms. Email dixie@simmons.edu or call 617-521-2828 to reserve your space all day or for individual sessions.

Ready for TOR II?

Creating your a web page is not as bad as you think -- really! It’s actually fun. The TOR Part II workshops will cover everything you need to create your first web pages, and covers all of the TOR requirements, including PowerPoint, HTML, creating portable document format (.pdf) files from virtually any application, and loading your page so it's live on the Web.

The TOR II workshop is generally scheduled one or two weeks after Foundations.

Guest Instructors!

Gary Atwood

Some of you may remember Gary as the previous GSLIS West Library Assistant. He introduces us to the mysteries of social tagging. Is cataloging obsolete? Can a community really build its own functional taxonomy? Last offered Spring 2007.

Nathan Mealey

Nathan is another GSLIS West alumnus. He is now the Systems Librarian at Simmons College Library, where he has introduced the staff to the wonders of open source wiki and blog software from Word Press. In Summer of 2007 he shared that knowledge with the GSLIS West community.

Brian Talbot

Brian is a senior web designer at Simmons College, who is a regular at GSLIS West. This summer he will be back to continue with XHTML and CSS, extending the capabilities he introduced in "Prettify your Web Pages: this Spring. XHTML spring from the marriage of HTML and XML. It provides better control of your web page and enhances interoperability. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) allow you to easily change the look of your pages in one file without having to edit every HTML page. This is a major timesaver, and gives your pages a more consistent, professional look.

And there’s more!
