Getting Started

Before jumping in and looking for research, it is a good idea to have a refined topic and to know a little about it. Start with broad resources like encyclopedias, bibliographies, and handbooks to start to get a sense of what is available on your topic in the universe of information.

" Internet Mental Health is a free encyclopedia of mental health information created by a Canadian psychiatrist, Dr. Phillip Long." This site offers information on mental health disorders, psychoactive medications, diagnosis, and research.

The Merck Manual of Medical Information - Home Edition

" Merck & Co., Inc.'s online version of the home edition of their celebrated medical reference text. Based on The Merck Manual of Diagnosis and Therapy, the home edition is a new publication from Merck geared for the layperson but still containing searchable 'information about diseases, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.'" The manual can be accessed via an "interactive" version with video, audio and other multimedia features, or via a plain-text version.

A searchable database of information on 650 drugs, with information on how to take medicines, potential side effects, storage recommendations, and precautions, discussed in easy-to-understand language. "Information here is designed to supplement the information provided by your physician and the pharmacist who dispenses your prescriptions." The site also has info on several health and prescription related issues, such as vaccines, antibiotics, and medication errors.
