Fall Advising and Testing

At Undergraduate Orientation Check-In you will receive information about your testing and group advising assignments. We request that you make these appointments a priority in your Orientation Schedule.

Math Competency Exam

  • Students who need to take this exam will have the opportunity to do so on Sunday, August 31.
  • If you took this over the summer during one of the Open Campus Days, and did not pass, you may retake the exam in November when it is offered again.
  • Students taking the exam for the first time during orientation may also retake the exam in November if they do not pass.
  • All students must pass the exam by November of this semester, or you will automatically be placed in a Mathematics course (MATH 101 or 102, depending on what your score was).
  • Students who are planning on taking the exam again in November can work with a Math Tutor through the Center for Academic Achievement to prepare themselves for the re-take.

Foreign Language Placement Exams

  • Students who are taking a NEW language do not have to take a placement exam.
  • Students who are continuing a language that they have previously studied must take a placement exam.
  • Students who took the on-line exam over the summer and were contacted because their score indicated that they may be exempt from the requirement need to either take a proctored exam during orientation or schedule an exam time with the Center for Academic Achievement, located on the third floor of the Palace Road Building (P304), x2474.
  • Students who want to take a language exam for a language not taught at Simmons can make arrangements for a placement exam time with the Center for Academic Achievement, located on the third floor of the Palace Road Building (P304), x2474.
  • International students from non-English speaking countries are exempt from the requirement. Please contact the Center for Academic Achievement if you have any questions regarding this.

Advising During Orientation

  • On Tuesday, all students will have an opportunity to meet with their advisor and all of her/his advisees as a group. This is an opportunity for you all to get to know each other and to begin developing a strong relationship with your advisor.
  • Students who have not registered for any courses will be given priority to meet with an advisor and develop their fall semester schedule.
  • Students who need to make minor changes to their schedule can do so through the Registrar's Office, located on the second floor of the Main Campus Building.
  • Students who need to make major changes to their schedule should identify themselves to their orientation leaders so that appointments can be arranged for them to meet with their advisor.
  • All other students will not have an advising appointment during the Orientation. These students are encouraged to make an appointment in the first two weeks of classes to check in with their advisor.
