The mission of the Department of Public Safety is to provide a safe and secure environment in which Simmons College Community members may learn, work, and live and to do so as part of a collaborative effort within the surrounding community.

Who is Public Safety

The Department of Public Safety is responsible for campus security at Simmons College including the Main College Buildings, the Residence campus, and the Graduate School of Management. This Department operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The full time sworn police staff includes a Director of Public Safety, an Assistant Director, Lieutenants, Sergeants, Corporals, Police Officers, and the department also employees civilian dispatchers. The Director of Public Safety reports to the Director of Business Affairs. Public Safety also retains security personnel that are contracted by Simmons College from Securitas Security, Inc., the largest security company in the nation.

Campus Dispatch Center

The Dispatch Center, located just inside Simmons Hall on the residence campus is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week by a trained communications professional. The access control system manages the various security devices located throughout the College and alerts the Public Safety Dispatcher to situations which require further attention. This dispatcher can direct immediate response for any breach of security or safety.

All of the Full-time Simmons police officers are sworn police officers under Massachusetts General Law C. 22c s63. Each has attended a Massachusetts State certified police academies and has arrest authority on Simmons College Property. Officers receive annual in-service training through the state to maintain First Responder medical certification as well as remain current in the Laws of the Commonwealth. Additionally, the Public Safety Department conducts periodic in-service training to enhance the training received at the Commonwealth level. Officers also attend specialized training topics relating to a college environment such as: Computer Investigations, Crime Prevention and Community Policing, Interview and Interrogation, Weapons of Mass Destruction, Sexual Assault Investigations, Sexual Assault Investigations, COBWEB training, and Supervisory Training.
