Resources for Undergraduates

Miller/Knopf Career Resource Library

The Miller/Knopf Career Resource Library's Undergraduate Students page provides a comprehensive list of online career resources. On the library website, you will find online tools for investigating your interests, professions, labor market trends, salaries, and graduate schools. The CRL also offers many services in person, including specialized career reference services, a large library of career reference books, a computer lab and study area.

Career Development Timeline

You can benefit from the Career Education Center services beginning in your first year at Simmons. The Career Development Timeline recommends activities you can do throughout your undergraduate years.

The purpose of this timeline is to help you explore the career goals that match your interests, values, work style, and needs. The more you reflect on what tasks, experiences and coursework you most enjoy, the easier it will be to determine the career that is right for you.

The Freshmen Year

  • Explore majors, considering which ones meet your interests, career goals, values, and aptitude (you may need to meet with a career counselor for help).
  • Figure out what tasks you enjoy the most (for example, whether you like working with a team or by yourself) and the subject areas that interest you.
  • Learn as much as possible about career options through extracurricular activities, courses, volunteer positions, and work-study and part-time employment.
  • Get to know faculty, advisers, and career counselors for help deciding career and academic goals.
  • Use computer self-assessment programs such as SIGI-plus and Focus, located in the Career Resource Library. By working with a career counselor, these programs can help you assess what fields match your interests.

The Sophomore Year

  • Begin to focus on a major. If you are undecided, make an appointment with a career counselor. If you have not already done so, check out the self-assessment resources in the Career Resource Library.
  • Attend workshops to learn more about job search skills such as: resume writing, cover letters, interviewing and using the world wide web to research career options.
  • Continue your work on clarification of your values, interests, skills, and goals.
  • Use every possible opportunity to gain experience through internships, work-study, faculty research, courses and volunteer work.
  • Listen to people describe the work that they do to learn more about what's out there and what interests you.

The Junior Year

  • Now is the time to be fine-tuning your career and educational goals.
  • Give serious consideration to the career path you have chosen, noting whether it's a match with your personal and work style.
  • Meet with a career counselor to be certain that you are on the right track and to fine-tune your goals and strategy.
  • Research the occupations that you are considering. Use resource materials in the career library and network with alumnae/i, and others.
  • Continue to build your skill level through internships, research projects, and part-time, summer, volunteer and work-study positions.
  • Develop relationships with faculty and meet with your adviser to make certain that you meet the graduation requirements and are doing all you can to jump-start your career.
  • If you're thinking about graduate school, make certain that you will meet all course requirements and begin the application process.

The Senior Year

  • Make searching for the right career one of your very top priorities. Try to attend every relevant career fair, career exploration workshop, and on-campus interview.
  • Meet with a career counselor to develop a strategy to achieve your goals.
  • Establish a recommendation file in the Career Education Center.
  • Learn more about the field that interests you through informational interviews. Check out the alumnae files in the Career Resource Library to begin building your network of contacts.
  • Write letters and send resumes to potential employers.
  • Prepare a thirty second advertisement, highlighting your skills and career goals, to introduce yourself to potential employers and people in your network.
  • Continue to improve your job search presentation skills by refining your resume and cover letter, and through videotaped mock interviews.
