Mosaic Multicultural Mentoring Program

Program Description

Mosaic offers you a unique opportunity to be matched with alumnae who will provide career and life mentoring through advising and job shadowing. The Mosaic Multicultural Mentoring program matches sophomore and junior undergraduate students of color with alumnae of color for mentoring and job-shadowing. The purpose of the program is for Simmons women to share their professional insights, promote confidence, and encourage an understanding of career growth and personal potential among Simmons students.

Mentors in the Mosaic program are Simmons women of color from various professional, cultural, and geographic backgrounds; many mentors live and work in the northeast, others are located throughout the country. As a participant in the Mosaic program, you will you will shadow your mentor in action in her professional environment. Travel related expenses associated with the program will be paid for by Simmons.

Mosaic will connect you with an accomplished Simmons alumna who has volunteered to guide you through a job shadowing experience; this may include informational interviews, exposure to her work environment, or a unique experience which you identify together. Shadowing experiences will be awarded based on student interview, quality of application, good academic standing and the potential for you to benefit from the experience. Not only does Mosaic offer you valuable insights into professional leadership qualities and skills, but if selected for the program, you can continue connecting with mentors and other Mosaic participants after your successful completion of the shadowing experience.

At the formal kick-off event on Saturday, January 31, 2009 you will be provided with training as well as information that will help you reach the goals of the Mosaic program.

For additional information, please see FAQs about the Mosaic Program.

Applying to the Mosaic Program

In order to be considered for the Mosaic program, please complete the following steps. Note that the deadline for submitting your application and résumé is November 2, 2008. However, if possible, submit the brief but important application early. A complete timeline of the application process is included with the Frequently Asked Questions.

Step 1: Complete and submit the online application form no later than Sunday, November 2, 2008.

Step 2: Make sure an updated résumé is on your CareerLink profile. If you have not yet received a user name and ID via email from the Career Education Center (CEC), please call the CEC at (617) 521-2488 or stop by the CEC at One Palace Road, Suite 304. CEC staff members are ready to assist you with any CareerLink-related questions.

If you prefer, simply send an electronic copy of your résumé to the Office of Alumnae/i Relations via email at alumnet@simmons.edu  with the subject line: Mosaic Student Resume.

Step 3: Familiarize yourself with the following expectations of the Mosaic Mentoring Program.

Participation in this program means you accept the responsibility to do the following:

Be professional!

This means everything from checking spelling and grammar in your written communication (emails, essays, résumé, etc.), to dressing appropriately, to writing thank-you notes. While these may seem obvious, their importance cannot be overstated.

Follow instructions!

Research information about your mentor and/or mentor's organization. Details about preparing for your shadowing experience will be provided soon after notification of acceptance to the program. These instructions are intended to help you gain the most from your experience.

Attendance at the kickoff event on Saturday, January 31, 2009 is required by all participants. Please be aware of this date and be sure to include this in your calendar as a priority.

Be reliable!

Plane delayed? Telephone your mentor. Blizzard keeps you in Boston? Notify your NYC hotel immediately to cancel your reservation, etc. If you make plans to call her at a certain time -- do so, or to notify her in enough time to reschedule the call.

Be reflective!

Within two weeks of your shadowing experience, submit a brief essay (300 to 500 words) that describes what you learned, felt, and experienced as a Success Connection participant. This essay will be shared with your mentor and possibly in whole or in part with the Simmons community (via web, fliers, etc.)./p>

Be available!

When you graduate from Simmons, register on Alumnet, the online alumnae community. Even as a recent graduate, please consider mentoring and volunteer to be a resource for a Simmons student as you advance in your own career. Also, keep your contact information current if you move or change jobs.

Special Note

Selection to Mosaic is based on leadership experience, professionalism (expressed through both the written application and personal interview), and good academic standing. Career Education Center staff is available to assist students with interview preparation, résumé review, and all other parts of the application process.
