Dear Students,
Technology at Simmons College welcomes you to campus! Here is some information to help you start your semester smoothly.
Printing
Remember that you have 350 free printouts and 50 bonus pages for misprints. Make sure you set up your Shark Card account and add money to it well before you reach the 300 mark ($21). Printers that print double-sided have been installed in the Information Commons on the 2nd floor in the Library. So, save a tree and print on both sides of the paper. For more information and tips about printing go to http://my.simmons.edu/printing.
Saving and transporting files
Don't save files on the "desktop" or hard drives of Simmons general access or lab computers. On restart all changes (including saving of files) made to general access and lab computers are erased. Instead save to:
- your personal folder on the file server (y:). You can access these files remotely from any computer with an Internet connection by going to http://remote.simmons.edu.
- a USB flash storage device (a.k.a. USB key)
- a CD-RW
Disinfect and Protect your computer
If your computer is overtaken by adware, spyware, viruses or worms, it will be impossible for you to get anything done, and, if attached to the Simmons network, your computer may infect others on campus. Go to http://my.simmons.edu/disinfect-protect and follow all of the steps on the web site, including installing free antivirus software. You may also pick up a Disinfect and Protect CD from your RA, or at the Information Commons Technology Desk on the 2nd floor of the library.
Self-Help Clinics
Is your computer or laptop behaving poorly? Take it to a Self-Help Clinic. Help Desk technicians will be available to guide you through fixing your own computer or laptop. In addition to the (regular schedule), the following clinics are available: -Arnold Hall from September 6-12 and September 14-16 from 3 – 5 pm -P310 on September 13 and 19 from 3 – 5 pm
Information Commons Technology Desk
If you haven’t already, be sure to visit the Library Information Commons. Stop by the Technology Desk on the 2nd floor if you need assistance with logging onto Simmons computers, accessing WebMail or WebCT, saving and transporting files, or using Simmons software. You can also check out a wireless laptop to use in the library.
Good luck this semester!
