On August 16th from 1:00 – 2:30, Academic Technology will host an interactive phone conference, "Distance Education: Are the Benefits worth the Costs?" in P311. Call x2736 or email ptrc@simmons.edu to register.

The session will be facilitated by Dr. Barry Willis who has extensive experience with distance education, having served as University of Alaska’s statewide Director of Distance Education. His publications include: Distance Education: Strategies and Tools and Distance Education: A Practical Guide.

In this conference, attendees will learn to:

• Define "cost effectiveness" as it relates to distance education programs and services
• Identify the factors that determine the cost effectiveness of distance education programs and services
• Identify and prioritize the different "stakeholders" to be served by the distance education enterprise
• Apply appropriate principles and practices to determine whether or not a verifiable market exists for the programs that you would like to deliver
• Describe and apply a process for identifying your key competitors
• Describe and apply a process for tracking the real costs of the technical services required to deliver your programs
• Describe and apply a process for tracking the costs of providing appropriate academic and student support services
• Understand and apply the four strategies needed to maximize the effectiveness of your distance education enterprise
