Windows Vista: Install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 7

It is important to have a recent and stable version of Java on your computer. Older versions have serious security vulnerabilities. And, the Simmons learning management system, Simmons Vista, requires this specific version of Java.

Uninstall any previous versions of Java

In order to install this version of Java, you must first uninstall any older or newer versions of the program.

  1. Open the Control Panel (click Start -> Control Panel), click Classic View on the left, and double click Programs and Features .
  2. Look for items such as "Java Web Start", "Java 2 Runtime Environment" and "J2SE Development Kit 5.0 Update 3." Select them, one at a time, and click Uninstall at the top to uninstall each.
  3. After all versions of Java have all been uninstalled, restart your computer.

Install Java

  1. Click here to install Java
  2. Click Run.
  3. If you have User Account Control enabled, you may see a window asking for your permission to continue. Click Continue.
  4. After Windows Installer configures the Java setup program, the License Agreement screen appears. Read the agreement then select "Typical setup" and click Next.
  5. When the installation is complete, click Finish.
