Windows: Backing up Browser Bookmarks/Favorites

Firefox

  1. From the Bookmarks menu, choose Organize Bookmarks
  2. From the File menu, choose Export
  3. Select the location where you want to save the bookmarks.html file. If you are on campus, save it directly to the file server. Otherwise, remember the location where you save the file, and copy it to a backup storage device when you are finished.
  4. Click Save
Note: you can import bookmarks from a saved backup by choosing Import instead of Export above.

Netscape 7

  1. Open the "My Computer" window by either double-clicking on the shortcut icon or clicking on "Start" then clicking on "My Computer."
  2. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\username\randomchars\ and find the bookmark.htm file.
    Note: if you cannot see the Application Data folder click on Tools — Options — Show Hidden Files and Folders.
  3. Copy bookmarks.html to backup location (i.e. H:\ username\Documents).

Internet Explorer

  1. Open the "My Computer" window by either double-clicking the shortcut icon or clicking on "Start" then clicking "My Computer."
  2. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\username\ and find the "Favorites" folder.
    Note: if you cannot see the Application Data folder click on Tools — Options — Show Hidden Files and Folders.
  3. Copy the "Favorites" folder to back up location (i.e. H:\ username\Documents).
