Off-campus: sending mail

To send mail from off campus, you must configure your email application to use the correct outgoing (or SMTP, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) mail server settings.  There is no configuration needed if you use Simmons Webmail to send email on or off-campus.

You have the option of using the SMTP mail server provided by your Internet Service Provider or the Simmons SMTP mail server. Some Internet Service Providers may require that you use their SMTP mail server. You should contact your ISP to obtain the correct server information and policy.

Simmons SMTP server settings

To send email from off-campus, turn on your email application's SMTP "user name and password" option.

SMTP server:  smtp.simmons.edu
User Name:  your Simmons email username
Port:  587
You will be prompted for your Simmons email password when you attempt to send email.

Below you will find examples of these settings using a few common email applications.

Thunderbird 1.5.x (Mac OS and Windows)

1. Open Thunderbird and select Account Settings from the Tools
     menu. Select Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left menu.
2. Select the outgoing mail server profile from the pane on the right, and click edit.
3. In the Description field type Simmons Mail Server
4. In the Server field, type smtp.simmons.edu
5.Change the Port to 587
6. Select the option User name and password, and then type your user
     name in the User Name: field.
7. For the Use secure connection (SSL): option, select TLS, if
     available. This option is recommended for the Simmons SMTP
     server.
8. Click OK.

Outlook 2003

1. Open Outlook 2003 and select Email Accounts from the Tools
     menu. Check View or change existing e-mail accounts under
     E-mail and click Next.
2. Select the Change button and type smtp.simmons.edu
 in the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.
3. Click More Settings and select the Outgoing Server tab.
4. Check the box for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
     authentication. Check the option for Log on using and type your
     user name in the User Name: field.
5. Click the Advanced tab. Set Outgoing server (SMTP) to 587, then check the option for This server
     requires an encrypted connection (SSL). This option is
     recommended for the Simmons SMTP server.
6. Click OK. Click Finished.

Apple Mail 1.3.x

1. Open Apple Mail and select Preferences from the Mail menu.
2. Select the Accounts icon and then select the Account
     Information heading.
3. Click the drop-down menu for Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): and
     select Add Server...
4. For Outgoing Mail Server, type smtp.simmons.edu
5. For Server Port, enter 587
6. Check the box for Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). This option is
     recommended for the Simmons SMTP server.
7. Click the drop-down menu for  Authentication and select Password.
8. Type your user name in the User Name: field. Click OK.
