  1. How many free printouts from public print stations am I allowed?
At the start of each semester, all users, including faculty and staff, will get 350 free black and white pages, with a bonus of 50 pages to allow for possible misprints (for a total of 400 free black and white pages). Users printing color printouts will be charged $0.77 per page (or 11 black and white pages per printout).
  2. What happens if I print more than 400 pages?
When you reach your print quota, you will only be able to print at the public print stations if you have a Fenway Card account with money in it. We advise you to keep an eye on your quota, and make sure you have sufficient money on your card before you print 300 pages (when you have $7 left). For information about Fenway Card accounts, please see the Campus Card web site. Your Fenway Card account will be charged $0.07 per black and white page and $0.77 per color page.
  3. How can I add more money to my card?
Users with an active Fenway Card account can add money to their cards online with a credit card. For information about Fenway Card accounts, please see the Campus Card web site. Your Shark Card account will be charged $0.07 per black and white page and $0.77 per color page.
  4. If I do not exceed the quota will the extra pages roll over to the next semester?
No. Accounts are reset at the beginning of each semester. The quota is a generous allowance for your semester's academic needs.
  5. How many printouts am I allowed over the summer?
Students enrolled in summer classes, and all faculty and staff, will receive 350 free pages, with a bonus of 50 pages to allow for possible misprints (for a total of 400 free black and white pages). Users not enrolled in classes will be required to pay for printing.
  6. What happens if I forget my Simmons ID and need to print?
If you forget your ID, you can obtain a temporary card from one of the Library Information Commons service points: the Cirulcation, Reference, or Technology desks; or, save your documents to the file server or USB flash storage device (memory stick) and print later.
  7. What if I am a student worker or teacher's assistant (TA) and need to print as part of that work?
Administrative and academic departments may use their Departmental Copy Card for the public printers. To obtain a Departmental Copy card, visit Campus Card office in the Main Campus Building, room E-007.
  8. Where can I print double sided?
There are double sided printers on the 1st floor of the Library Information Commons, and in the Library and Lab at the School of Management. Also see Saving paper (and money) for instructions on how to print double-sided.
  9. If I print double sided will it count as one page or two?
Printing on both sides of the paper cuts down on waste and benefits the environment. Your quota will be decremented by the number of pieces of paper used. For example, if you print 5 pages double sided, you will be charged for 3 prints. Please help us help the environment, and stretch your quota further too: print double sided.
  10. Can I print to a public printer if I am not a current Simmons student?
Guests and alumnae/i can obtain a card from one of the Information Commons service points: the Circulation, Reference or Technology desks. In order to use the card to print, you must first add value (money) to it with a credit card online with a credit card. There will be card dispensers available on campus later in the fall 2006 semester.
  11. Who decided to implement a print quota policy and why?
Printing from public printers has dramatically increased over the past five years. Therefore, the Simmons Technology Governance Committee gathered printing statistics, compared printing quota policies at other schools, and assessed the cost of printing at the College. The Committee decided to allow a generous amount of free printing to users, so that more College funds do not need to be shifted from other services to printing.
  12. What are other colleges and universities doing?
Few schools offer any free printing, and most of those that do, offer fewer free pages than Simmons. The Simmons policy is more generous than that of our peers.
  13. Where can I see the actual policy?
The Printing Policy is available on the my.simmons web site.
