Student Responsibilities

Students and Technology agree to work together with mutual respect and courtesy. While Technology assists students with questions and issues pertaining to technology, students should take the following proactive measures to ensure that their own computers run smoothly.

  • Comply with all Simmons policies such as the policies on Acceptable Use, Copyright and FileSharing (all available from http://my.simmons.edu/technology/policies).
  • Run operating system updates on a regular basis to ensure a secure and stable system
  • Install antivirus software, keep virus definitions current, and run regular virus scans. (Technology makes available antivirus software to all students without charge; see Safe Computing.)
  • Backup important files on a regular basis
  • Delete old documents from the file server to save space
  • Use only hardware and software meeting Simmons standards (see Recommended Computer Specifications and Technology Services for You: Examples)
  • Report service problems promptly by contacting the Help Desk at 617-521-2222, or sending email to helpdesk@simmons.edu.

In fairness to all of our customers, Technology will assist and advise students who have not installed or kept up-to-date antivirus software and definitions, and kept their OS updated once; after the first incident, Technology will refer students to alternate sources for assistance.

To protect the owner and others, Technology may need to suspend network access to computers believed to be causing problems until the offending machine has been verified by the Help Desk to be running properly. Because of the impact on others, network access may have to be revoked without notice.

Students are required to check their email accounts on a frequent basis in order to remain current with College-related communications. Official College communication distributed by email will be done only through simmons.edu accounts. Professors, staff, and fellow students will contact you using your Simmons address. Because of the importance of these messages, you may choose to forward your Simmons email to a non-Simmons account (see http://preferences.simmons.edu/, and follow the link for email preferences).

Technology resources are shared: other students as well as faculty and staff depend on borrowers to return equipment on time and in good condition. Students must return equipment borrowed from Technology on time or pay overdue fees. Technology will refer to the Honor Board students who repeatedly keep equipment past its due date and time.
