NOTE FROM MARY D.
A warm welcome to all of our new students and all of our returning students who have just had the month off!! The folks I have seen around school all enjoyed their month off!! Many are ready to start again, many more are wishing you had another week or two to relax, but everyone is relaxed and smiling! Foundations went really well in both the day and evening programs and it feels great to start again and see everyone!
A couple of important changes for students to know about…
1. Effective September, 2005, there is a print quota in effect for all Simmons College students at the College public printers. Everyone gets 350 free copies on your ID card and 50 extra for mistakes and other printing issues each semester. Color copies will cost more than black and white. When you run out of copies, you will need to add money to your ID via the shark card system. Alums, guests, and any students who forget their ID cards at home can purchase a shark card in the area outside of the oval dining room. That is also the location to add money to your ID card. Bill Porter will have more info if you need it!
2. All SOM moves and reloctions have been completed!! We really appreciated everyone’s patience and support throughout the summer as we worked on the buildings. The new spaces are great and students should be pleased with the results.
3. Mockler, SOM library and kiosk area, and the Oval Dining Room are now wireless.
4. The SOM has purchased 25 laptops for classroom instruction in Mockler.
5. We welcome three new faculty to the MBA program this semester: Jane Mooney will be teaching Financial Accounting in the day and evening sections; Abbott Weiss will be teaching QA in the day section; and Richard Homonoff will join Indra and teach a section of Finance in the evening program. All of them will have offices in the 409 building.
QUOTES OF THE WEEK
Given the popularity of the quotes of the week last year, Mary D. has promised to do it regularly this year. Here are her quotes to start the year!!
“Beginning today I will learn something new; I will try something different; I will savor all the various flavors life has to offer. I will change what I can and the rest I will let go. I will strive to become the best me I can possibly be.” — Unknown
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” — Unknown
MIT ENTERPRISE FORUM: The Power Of Revolutionary Thinking
Whether you’re a scientist, intrepreneur, entrepreneur or corporate strategist, real success and real impact will come from your organization’s ability to deliver quantum leap-style thinking that promotes advances in technological innovation and products that boost bottom line results. But how do you do this? How can you become a REVOLUTIONARY thinker? This event features a panel of visionary researchers broadcast live via satellite from Atlanta who will explore how organizations, both large and small, can use revolutionary thinking to enhance the innovation process, and show us how advanced concepts go from far-off vision to becoming part of our everyday lives. In addition to material coming to us via satellite
from Atlanta, we will be joined live on stage in Cambridge by Joe Parrish, President of Payload Systems.

COLLEGE TO CAREER PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS OF COLOR
The Partnership, Inc. is a for-profit organization that focuses on the development and retention of professionals of color in the Boston area. Last year, The Partnership successfully launched its College to Career Program designed to develop a pipeline of leadership among the large number of students of color in the Greater Boston area.
The emphasis of the College to Career Program is to provide resources to students transitioning from college life to the professional world. Through a series of workshops, forums and events, participants acquire skills and tools necessary to define and develop successful career paths. In addition to the formal programming, an informal mentoring process is facilitated through a series of structured interactions with members of The Partnership’s professional leadership development programs, as well as the more than 1,300 alumni professionals.
Applications are due on Thursday, September 15th. Please contact Suzzette Turnbull (suzzette.turnbull@simmons.edu, 617.521.3839) for more information.
STUDENT/ALUMNAE SERVICE DAY

From 11:30am-12:30pm, we will be having pizza, and getting to know each other in Caseroom 2 in Mockler. Then we will carpool to the Food Bank.
If you are interested in serving at this student/alumnae project, please contact Zuania Pomales at pomales@simmons.edu or 617-953-6680 by September 23rd.
Please wear closed toe shoes. No lifting required.
VISTA WEBCT TRAINING SESSIONS
Voon She from Academic Technology will be available on Tuesday, 9/13; Wednesday, 9/14; and Thursday, 9/15 from 5:00-5:45pm in Caseroom 2 to answer any Vista WebCT questions and to provide training as needed.
STUDENT ACADEMIC COUNCIL
Each year we ask for students who are interested in serving on the student advisory council, which is an advisory group to the MBA office. It is a virtual group that gives input and feedback on any number of issues under consideration to improve the MBA program. Topics could range from elective offerings, to the academic calendar, accreditation issues, or the new building. It is a voluntary commitment and we invite anyone who is interested to email Mary D. She is the advisor to this group. Her email is mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu. It is a great way to be involved with the school ! Students who were on it last year should reconfirm interest in staying on it as well! Thanks!
STUDENT CLUBS
If anyone is interested in joining a club or starting a club, please contact Suzzette Turnbull (suzzette.turnbull@simmons.edu, 617.521.3839). She will provide details and protocol for club events, budgets, reimbursements, etc. Currently, the active clubs are: Finance Club, Consulting Club, Social Club, Latina Club, Women of Color Club, International Student Club, and Net Impact Club. Students have also expressed interest in reactivating the Feedback Club and the Entrepreneurship Club. Stay tuned for more club info soon; this is going to be an exciting year!!
PARKING
The SOM has moved to a pay for parking system for faculty and staff. In the past, we did not tow without trying to find folks in spaces they shouldn’t be parked. Simmons College has a vendor that now will regularly patrol its parking lots and tow without attempting to locate the violator. Please remember this!! Many students regularly took chances during the day and evening classes and hoped nothing would happen. It will not be true this year!
CONGRATULATIONS
Karen Griswold and her husband Chris are proud parents of Ella Victoria, who was born on 8/4/05, 7:16pm on Thursday - 8lbs 6oz and 21 inches long. Everyone is doing great!
