NOTE FROM MARY D.
As I talk with students this week, it is clear that you are in the middle of the semester, with quizes, exams, papers, and normal class prep coming fast, furious and often!! For many of you, a long weekend is around the corner for Veterans day, but for all of us, Thanksgiving is three weeks from today! Can you believe it?? And, three weeks after that holiday, the semester will be over and you will get a break! The good news is that folks are still smiling, loving school and just figuring out how to get everything done. That is a great sign. We will provide study breaks all next week as a way of saying that we know how hard everyone is working and it is all worth it!!

REGISTRATION UPDATES
We will email the Spring 2006 Registration Materials to all students on Friday, November 4th. Registration opens Sunday, November 13th at 10:00am.
In addition, we are excited to announce the first interdisciplinary elective course offered at the College for all of its schools:
This new interdisciplinary elective is called Cultural Intelligence for the 21st Century: Globalization and Diversity. This is a 3-credit course with only four SOM student slots available. As it is a first time offering, students who choose this elective will also get a one-credit scholarship. It is also a course that will cross into the Summer term, but we have made the necessary SOM adjustments to insure no problems! Please note that this course will be taught on the main campus.
This course is an intensive examination of the importance of multicultural competence for the graduate professional programs and upper level undergraduates at Simmons College. We anticipate that undergraduates and students in the graduate schools of Social Work, Management, Library Science and Health Studies will increase their cross-cultural awareness, knowledge and skills to respond appropriately to the problems and opportunities of both domestic and international demographic changes and globalization. As a result of breakdowns in institutional reliability and professional self-policing, cynicism and public distrust of the professions are at an all time high. We believe that the role of professional education is to engage students in a redefinition of their professional identity to include civic responsibility for themselves and their profession, with a personal commitment to a deeper engagement with society (Schulman, 2004). This engagement requires cross cultural and global understanding. Additionally, the multidisciplinary nature of this course provides opportunity for multilevel discussions and interventions (individual, group, organizational and institutional) as students are exposed to problems specific to professional areas other than their own while also investigating the commonality of cross cultural dilemmas in all professions.
At the completion of this course students will:
1. Understand the importance of becoming a ‘global citizen’
2. Develop awareness of oneself as a cultural being
3. Demonstrate increasing comfort and skills in working with difference and diversity its many forms: race/ethnicity, nationality, class, gender, sexual orientation/preference, age and ability
4. Learn to work effectively in a multicultural and global environment
5. Be prepared to assume a leadership role in a diverse and global context and understand the impact of institutionalized discrimination and oppression and its impact on societies

VETERANS DAY SCHEDULE - FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 11th
The MBA office will be closed on Friday, November 11th as there are no day or evening classes!!
OPERATIONS UPDATE
The broken bricks in the back of 409 will be repaired on Saturday, November 5th. The contractors may close the back gate of 409 to do the work. If that happens, please use the Library door or the front doors on Commowealth Ave. Thanks!

You can now order your Spring Semester T-passes. Order forms are in your mailboxes or available in the MBA Office. Don’t delay! Get your T-pass order and payment in before you leave for winter break. Orders and payment are due by January 4th, 2006 check or money order only, sorry no credit cards).

BUSINESS RHYTHMS: A SPEAKERS FORUM
Full-time working women still get paid—on average—only 77 cents for each dollar full-time working men get paid. Twenty years ago, the common explanation was that the gender wage gap existed because of a “merit gap.” Women, this theory went, were not as educated as men, hadn’t worked as long, or were working in stopgap jobs until they got married, while men were family breadwinners. With all the increases in women’s education and employment in the last two decades, why are their wages still lagging so far behind?
The Commonwealth Institute will feature this topic at business RHYTHMS: A Speakers Forum with Evelyn Murphy, former Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts, PhD economist, and author of the new book Getting Even: Why Women Don’t Get Paid Like Men and What To Do About It (Simon & Schuster, September 2005).

WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY INTERNATIONAL (WITI) PANEL
WITI (Women in Technology International) presents a panel program “BioTech-BioScience: What’s the Future for Women?”. Panelists include executive women from leading biotech-bioscience companies who will explore the issues and opportunities that await women who are either considering a profession in this sector or advancing their careers. Panelists include Joan Wood, VP of Workforce Development, Genzyme; Jean Qiu, founder of Nexcelom Bioscience; and Jill Panetta, cofounder and chief scientific officer of InnoCentive.
