Job Description
Patricia Clarke, SOM Assistant Professor, is seeking a current junior, senior, or graduate management student at Simmons for the Spring and/or Summer semesters to assist with the research and the coordination of her ongoing financial literacy project with Mgmt 260 Principles of Finance students. Each semester, the students develop materials for a Personal Finance Information Workshop for English as a Second Language (ESL) adult learners from the International Learning Center, which is located at the central YMCA in Boston. Topics include uses of both short- and long-term borrowing, such as credit cards and higher education, as well as short- and long-term savings, including retirement. The Assistantship will support this project.
Commitment and Compensation
Spring Semester (Teaching and Research Assistant): 14 weeks/9 hours per week/$1,400 stipend
Summer (Research Assistant): flexible dates/completion of 80 hours/$1,000 stipend
Please note: Applications accepted for one or both semesters.
Responsibilities
1. Monitor undergraduate student preparation and progress for financial literacy workshop
2. Edit and collate materials that are developed by the students for the workshop
3. Assist in assessment of student learning outcomes
4. Handle specific logistical details for the financial literacy workshop and related meetings
5. Assist faculty and ESL adult learners at the International Learning Center in preparation for the financial literacy workshop
6. Research assessment, curriculum sources, and “best practices” for teaching strategies
Qualifications
1. A positive, collaborative attitude and outstanding interpersonal skills
2. Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently in meeting deadlines and managing paperwork
3. Strong knowledge of finance (especially personal finance) and Microsoft Excel
4. Experience with community service, service learning, or non-profit organizations and genuine interest in issues of social responsibility
5. Fluency or extensive experience with a second language a plus
