NOTE FROM MARY D.
In talking with many of you this week, Thanksgiving was a great moment to catch your breath, but I know that many of you also spent a lot of time studying or working on projects. Two more weeks til the end of the semester!! Pace yourselves as you have many deliverables and exams coming up in addition to normal prep. It is also particularly hard when your family and friends start holiday parties, shopping, etc and you are studying for a final. Remember, it will all be worth it and a break is coming sooner than you think!!

QUOTES OF THE WEEK

“Within each of us is a hidden store of energy. Energy we can release to compete in the marathon of life Within each of us is a hidden store of courage. Courage to give us the strength to face any challenge Within each of us is a hidden store of determination. Determination to keep us in the race when all seems lost.” — From Roger Dawson’s The 13 Secrets of Power Performance

“Learn the art of patience. Apply discipline to your thoughts when they become anxious over the outcome of a goal. Impatience breeds anxiety, fear discouragement and failure. Patience creates confidence, decisiveness and a rational outlook, which eventually leads to success.” — Brian Adams

LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE - STUDENT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!!!

Interested in volunteering for the 2006 SOM Leadership Conference?

To accommodate busy schedules, we will hold two informational meetings on Monday, January 23rd, the first from 3-3:45pm and the second from 5:15-6pm. You must attend one of these meetings to be eligible to volunteer for the conference.

Both meetings will be in Case Room 2 in the Mockler Building. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the Mockler Building for those interested in attending/volunteering.

Volunteers are essential to our success. In exchange for your contribution, you will be permitted to attend the conference FREE. (Conference fees are $470.00 for SOM students)

•All volunteers may attend Alfre Woodard’s closing keynote address.
•All volunteers will receive a complimentary conference bag.
•Volunteers have the opportunity to network with corporate sponsors and to interact with nearly 3000 attendees from the nation’s major corporations.
•Volunteering for the Leadership Conference shows your active support for the SOM. This is a “hands-on” way to show your support for your school.

Volunteering for the Conference requires the following minimum commitment:
•Attendance at the Monday, January 23rd meeting.
•One additional pre-Conference instructional meeting and tour to be held in April (2 options will be offered) at the Seaport World Trade Center.
•Half-day of work at the Leadership Conference.

Leadership Conference Date: Saturday, April 22, 2006

This year’s conference will be held during school vacation week. If you plan to be away during school vacation, please do not sign up to volunteer.

We need and genuinely appreciate your support. Your time and effort directly supports the SOM. All proceeds raised by the Leadership Conference fund SOM MBA scholarships.

If you have any questions, please contact Judy Benjamin at judith.benjamin@simmons.edu or Ali Corvino at ahcorvino@comcast.net.

MIT ENTERPRISE FORUM: FORECASTING 2006
In January 2005, the MIT Enterprise Forum’s panel of experts predicted that in the coming year the prime rate would rise past 6.5 percent; life sciences and wireless would be the hot industries for venture capital funding; and the stock markets would have a strong year with more volatility and risk. What will our experts predict for 2006?

If knowledge of funding opportunities and access to capital is crucial to your business, then you need to attend the MIT Enterprise Forum’s next global broadcast program, “Forecasting Markets: The Capital Update for 2006,” on Thursday, January 26, 2006 from MIT’s Kresge Auditorium.

Attendees can expect to learn what the current climate is for entrepreneurs looking for capital and venture funding; how a company should approach their financing strategy; the steps one entrepreneur took to raise capital in today’s economy; and a forecast of the public markets for the coming twelve months.

Our featured panel includes:
Bob Crowley (moderator), president of the Massachusetts Technology Development Council
Ned Hazen, managing director of Lighthouse Capital Partners
Martin Hensel, chief executive officer of Texterity, Inc.
T.L. Stebbins, managing director and chairman of Investing Banking for Adams Harkness
Claire Wadlington, partner and chief financial officer of FA Technology Ventures.
