NOTE FROM MARY D.
What a great week we have had at the SOM. Foundations ended on a really good note, we had a wonderful Negotiations class that was compressed for the first time and had over 50 day and evening students in it, we had Trish Carter as our Exec in the Classroom and a wonderful business plan competition with our SOM alums competing for a $10,000 prize. Both of these events had over 90 guests in the audience. It was busy, but we are off to a fabulous start of the Spring term!!
QUOTES OF THE WEEK

TECHNOLOGY STAFF UPDATES
A warm thank you from all of us at the SOM to Mike Venza as he completes is co-op assignment at the SOM and returns to Wentworth. He was fabulous and helped many of us each and every day. When Bill Porter left this fall, he was willing to add many extra hours and responsibilities and we are very grateful!! We wish him much success as he continues in his career.
Amy O’Brien is our new Simmons Technology professional staff member and we are thrilled to have her! She had worked in another division within technology at the main college and we were lucky to be able to recruit her to the SOM. She will work with faculty, staff and students on all technology issues and we will introduce her soon!!
SIMMONS ENTREPRENEURSHIP COURSES & THE ENTREPRENEURSHIP CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
(Pssst!!! They’re not just for aspiring entrepreneurs!)
Learn to Think Creatively and Manage Organizational Change
Come hear about the exciting possibilities and offerings in our entrepreneurship program!
Two Info Sessions:
Tuesday, January 17th, 5:15 pm ~ CR2
Thursday, January 19th, 2 pm ~ CR2
Why attend? Because entrepreneurship is more than a set of tools and techniques for starting and growing a business. It’s a mindset; a way of looking at things that are opportunity-focused and creative. Entrepreneurial thinking can infuse your startup or spark the reinvention of an existing business.
“I never think about why something hasn’t been done already. I think about why nobody has done it right yet.” — Marcia Kilgore, entrepreneur and founder of Bliss Spa
SOM ALUMNA WINS 1ST SILVERMAN BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION
On January 10, Simmons SOM held its first annual Silverman Business Plan Competition. The winner, Michelle Conceison ‘03, was awarded a $10,000 cash prize for her business plan for Market Monkeys. The event featured remarks from six finalists, as well as SOM’s current Executive in the Classroom and keynote speaker for the event, Trish Karter - co-founder and CEO of Dancing Deer Baking Company.
Conceison’s company, Market Monkeys, is an integrated music marketing and management company specializing in marketing folk musicians in the digital entertainment age. During her remarks, Conceison spoke passionately about the company and the diverse set of services it offers to independent musicians and managers in the folk music arena. She also talked about the way in which Market Monkeys leverages the latest internet-based technologies to market and sell music.
“Being an entrepreneur can be a very isolating thing. This competition not only put me in front of teams of mentors to question, prod, and also conquer — but the event itself was rewarding. I manage musicians, so I’m always the person in the background. It was very rewarding to find people actively excited and engaged about my business,” said Conceison.
“We were all impressed by the quality of the business plan presentations and the passion and commitment of the finalists,” said SOM Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands. “The Business Plan Competition is a galvanizing opportunity for our alumnae to draw on a rich set of resources within the extended SOM network of faculty, alumnae, friends, and students to focus their entrepreneurial aspirations and sharpen their business plans.”
As the capstone event for the MBA Entrepreneurship Initiative, the Silverman Business Plan Competition will be a catalyst for Simmons SOM alumna working to start-up entrepreneurial businesses for years to come.
