MBA Office Updates

Note From Mary D.

We had a wonderful week with our exec in residence, Radha Basu, who was here for four days interacting with students in multiple ways. The one thing everyone has been talking about is not only her fabulous career and the learnings she shared about her experiences, but consistently people talked about her passion regarding her past and current experiences and how genuine it was, and how passion has influenced her career, her decisions and her life. She will be back in March and we will organize some more student events to have more of a chance to learn from her!

As for the Patriots, it is now about execution. You have two really talented teams, both that have prepared and practiced for this moment. Execution is now going to determine the outcome. My corollary to the MBA program this week is that some might argue that execution in the MBA program is directly related to your deliverables and how you do on your tests, papers and projects. Many of you will have exams and papers due in the next three weeks. Similar to halftime, it will be a moment to make adjustments, continue what is working, tweak or change what is not. I would argue that the classroom is very different from the playing field and that deliverables are only one measure of execution But, the big difference between the Super Bowl and your MBA program is that the MBA program also is a continual process of learning. At the end of the day, the Super Bowl is a game, and your program is a transformative, life and career changing experience that you will build on forever.

Quotes of the Week

“Quality is never an accident, it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the choice between many wise alternatives”
~~ William Foster

“Strategy gets you on the playing field, but execution pays the bills”
~~Gordon Eubanks

Note from Mary D. - SOM Staff Transitions

I am writing with two bittersweet updates regarding some upcoming staff changes that will directly affect you all as students!!

MBA Program Office

Carolyn Bogle, who has worked with me since 2003, is going to move upstairs and become the Dean’s executive assistant. It is a fabulous opportunity for her, but as all of you know, she is a central part of our MBA staff and will be sorely missed. The fun part for me is that I have seen Carolyn evolve from our student worker five years ago to a multi-talented professional with lots of great skills, a huge heart, and unlimited potential. The only way it is easy on me is because she is not leaving, only moving upstairs!! Her last day in the MBA Office will be February 8th.

In the Dean’s email to faculty and staff she noted that, “Carolyn will bring strong administrative skills and deep knowledge of and commitment to Simmons and the SOM to the position. This move will give Carolyn the opportunity to expand her administrative experience in higher education and complement her experience of working with students and faculty with that of working with alumnae and other external constituents. I am looking forward to working closely with Carolyn as we move through the final stage of AACSB, develop our work with the Business Advisory Council, and expand my role externally.”

I hope you will join me in congratulating Carolyn on this promotion!

SOM Library

Kathy Berger, who has been at the SOM for over 5 years, has accepted a position as the Assistant Head for Information Services at the Frederick S. Pardee Management Library at Boston University. It is a wonderful promotion for Kathy and truly one of those career opportunities that are special, even when you are happy in your current job.

Linda Schuller Wolf, her current boss, wrote - “During her time at the SOM Library, Kathy has played a vital role in providing reference and instruction service to so many members of our school. She has always gone above and beyond her job, as she provided the highest quality reference service in an efficient manner….with a smile. The students all admire her willingness to help and listen. We’ll all miss her vast knowledge of business information and her dedication to exemplary customer service. Kathy’s last day at the SOM Library will be February 8th .”

We totally echo Linda’s words and congratulate Kathy on this promotion.

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Hosted by Dr. Joyce K. Fletcher, Distinguished Scholar Simmons School of Management

This lecture series highlights new, cutting-edge research that is relevant to CGO’s work. Each lecture will link theory and practice by offering an opportunity to discuss practical implications of the findings and apply them to our own situation.

Date: Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Time: 12 noon – 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: YOU!

Topic: Hot Topics for Women in Leadership Today

The world is changing.  The world of work is changing.  Women and men are changing.  How are these issues affecting us and the change agenda we have for making our workplaces less gendered?  Today’s workshop will use a different format to help us identify the “hot topics” in our work lives today and discuss ways to address them.  Come to this session ready to suspend the rhetoric of the last 20 years ago and forge into new territory.  What do YOU see as the biggest issues?  Is it women working for women?  Getting men engaged in issues that used to be seen as “women’s issues” (e.g. work-life) but are now more widely accepted as universal?  Is it the issue of “extreme jobs” and leadership expectations?  Or?? CGO faculty as well as faculty from key area institutions will join in the discussion, bringing current research data and perspectives to enrich the dialogue.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu by February 8, 2008 for “Hot Topics for Women in Leadership Today”

Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Time: 12 noon – 1:30PM

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Boris Groysberg, Harvard Business School

Topic: Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?

Professor Groysberg's research focuses on the challenges of managing professional service firms, especially how firms develop, hire, retain, and utilize star knowledge workers. In this presentation he will discuss the issue of portability and the surprising findings from a study of investment banking professionals that women are able to maintain their star rankings more reliably than men after changing employers.  It appears that there are a number of things that occur in the process of becoming stars that make female analysts portable in a way their male colleagues are not.  Professor Groysburg will discuss these factors and lead a discussion about the practical implications of his findings for women, men and the field of knowledge work.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu by March 21, 2008 for “Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?”

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu  by April 11, 2008 for “Unmasking Masculinity
