For those of you that attended last
Friday’s tea with Ros Jaffe or the Business Plan competition, it was a
chance to not only watch your peers in action-presenting in front of 115
people, but also to learn from some very successful executives how they react
in the moment to presentations in front of them, deliver feedback, ask
probing questions, and relate their business experience with concrete
examples, suggestions, etc. The goal to help continue to refine the ideas of
the finalists was clear and everyone in the room learned something. I also
heard those who attended the tea with Ros also really enjoyed listening to
her story and getting a chance to interact with another very successful
entrepreneur and executive.
WINNER: Jennifer
Christian-Murtie, class of ’07, and current MBA Certificate
in Entrepreneurship student Yadumu Yadumu will provide comprehensive environmental,
economic, and sustainable development advice to hotels, lodges, and camps in
the ecotourism industry in Jennifer won $10,000 in cash plus in-kind prizes
valued at over $10,000 including legal services, logo design, brand
consulting and training programs. Jennifer, and the two other finalists presented
to a packed room of over 110, and the panel of 4 judges who said they were
impressed by the creativity and timely nature of her idea, tapping into a
major new trend, her passion for ecotourism, quality of the business
plan, knowledge of the African market and realistic vision and
financial goals. As a nice bonus, Yadumu also aligns
sustainability, social responsibility and profitability in its business
strategy, which are concepts and practices which are deeply integrated into
our MBA curriculum.

Change in Academic Policy Effective October 1st,
2007 The
curriculum committee has made a change to the Academic Policy that went into
effect October 1, 2007. Attached please find the new policy and the specific
area of the change is the transfer of credits section. The new language is as
follows: Transfer of Credits A
maximum of 9 credits may be allowed to transfer upon review of the syllabi of
the courses and the approval of the Associate Dean (Faculty). This
policy applies to entering students trying to transfer credit from another
school into Simmons. Current students trying to transfer credit
back to Simmons to apply towards our MBA degree requirements may do so only
under extenuating circumstances, with the approval of the Associate Dean
(Faculty). Grade
must be a B or better and taken at an AACSB school or equivalent. Courses
must have been taken within 3 years, must be graduate level, and the course
work cannot have been applied to an earned degree at another school. Students with any questions about this policy
change should talk to Mary D. SOM
Nationally Ranked (twice!) for Work in Principled Leadership For
three years, the SOM has been strengthening its teaching, research, and
convening on Principled Leadership and the strategic alignment of
profitability and social responsibility. Through our focus on
Principled Leadership, we seek to integrate a commitment to ethical
decision-making, environmental sustainability, corporate social
responsibility, inclusive organizations, and accountability to multiple
stakeholders as critical components of effective leadership and
organizational performance. I am
proud to announce that our accomplishments have been recognized in two
national rankings in the past month. Yesterday,
our Simmons MBA program was recognized as a leader in integrating social and
environmental issues into its MBA program according to the prestigious Aspen
Institute’s 2007-2008 edition of Beyond Grey Pinstripes, a
biennial survey and alternative ranking of business schools. Simmons
was ranked 32 on a list of the Global Top 100 Schools. The SOM is
ranked next to top business schools such as Stanford, “In
the Beyond Grey Pinstripes survey, success is measured by how well prepared
[MBA graduates] are to guide a company through the complex relationship of
business and society, where issues relating to the environment or the
well-being of a community can impact a company’s performance and
reputation.” said Judith Samuelson, Executive Director of the Aspen
Institute Business and Society Program. Visit www.BeyondGreyPinstripes.org
to learn more about this rigorous ranking and what business schools are doing
to explicitly address the role business can play in improving social and
environmental conditions. A
second external ranking in this area is the annual guide for students
published by the national organization Net Impact. Net Impact's
mission is to "make a positive impact on society by growing and
strengthening a community of new leaders who use business to improve the
world.” Net Impact has more than 150 chapters in graduate business
schools, including top business schools such as Harvard, MIT, Annually,
Net Impact surveys its chapters to get students’ opinions on how well
their schools integrate a commitment to corporate social
responsibility. In September, the "Business as Unusual: 2007
Net Impact Student Guide to Graduate Business Programs" was
released. I am delighted that the SOM MBA program was ranked among
the top 10 schools in 15 out of the 20 categories assessed and in the
top 5 in 8 of the categories. The full report, profiling all 60 ranked
schools, is available at http://www.netimpact.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=1020 I am
very proud of these rankings as I hope you are. I am proud of: how
innovative our faculty have been in addressing this priority; how much our
students have valued our emphasis on principled leadership; and how our small
school can compete effectively to offer thought and practice leadership in an
area that I believe will define business strategy and performance in the next
decade. These
rankings provide great visibility for our school and inspire us to keep
developing our work and reputation in this area. They should also help
us strengthen enrollments. Our research shows that women, in
particular, care about the issues embodied in principled leadership. As
a management school specifically designed for women, we need to remain on the
cutting-edge in this field. These recent rankings confirm that indeed
we are! As
always, I welcome your comments and feedback at somdean@simmons.edu.
The graduate Certificate in
Entrepreneurship at the Simmons College School of Management is an
innovative and intensive program designed to teach, mentor and network women
as they plan and launch new ventures. First delivered in 2004, the program is
comprised of a sequenced set of four graduate level business courses
including an Entrepreneurship Practicum integrated with a strong set of
co-curricular activities, for example, the Leading Women Entrepreneur
annual speaker series, the Silverman Business Plan Competition, Entrepreneur
and Visiting Entrepreneurial Scholar in Residence programs, and
the Simmons School of Management Mentor Network. The four course
sequence runs January through November and is carefully designed to lead you
from idea generation and evaluation (course 1) to business plan (course 2),
then post-launch management (course 3) integrated with an intensive field
experience working with an entrepreneur CEO (course 4). Please contact
Darla for more information at darla.pires-degrace@simmons.edu. Outside
the MBA Program Office, there is a map of the world on the wall to the right
as you walk down the short set of steps to the computer lab area. Map tacks
have been made available for you to pinpoint the cities/regions of the world
that you hail from or with which you associate culturally or heritage-wise.
We encourage you all to put your mark(s)
on the map! |
