Note From Mary D.

Next week is week 11 of the semester, so if you find yourself in the midst of lots of tests and deliverables, feeling that the pace is a bit relentless and you are a little tired, it is normal!! You only have 5 weeks left in the semester..Hard to believe!! The good news is that you have a break for the Thanksgiving holiday coming and a chance to catch your breath, have some fun with family and friends and gear up for the final push. I figured I would give my non sports fans a break this week from my analogies!!

News & Events

The CGO’s Fall, 2007 Distinguished Research Scholar Speakers Series.

Hosted by: Dr. Joyce K. Fletcher, Distinguished Research Scholar Simmons School of Management 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA.

Date: Today!

Time and Location: 4pm-5:30pm in the Green Room.
We will provide beverages and cookies.
Speaker and Topic: Karen Golden-Biddle, Professor of Organizational Behavior at Boston University School of Management,
“Excavating the Everyday Work of Change” Golden-Biddle, Professor of Organizational Behavior at Boston University School of Management,  “Excavating the Everyday Work of Change”

We hear a lot about major transformation, jolts and the large scale efforts associated with organizational change, But much of the essential work in changing organizations, that which takes place everyday in micro-level situations, has remained invisible. In this session, researcher and author Karen Golden-Biddle will present and give us an opportunity to excavate this everyday work of change, based on the findings of a 5 year study in real time of people implementing system change in the health sector.

>>>> Please RSVP by November 2 for “Excavating the Everyday Work of Change” to CGO@simmons.edu

Date: December 11, 2007
Time and Location: 12pm -1:30pm in the Green Room. This is a brown bag, cookies and beverages will be provided.
Speaker and Topic: Hannah Riley Bowles, Associate Professor of Public Policy at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, "Sometimes It Does Hurt to Ask".
Deficiency models suggest that women are reticent about negotiating for higher compensation because they lack confidence or training.   Research by Hannah Riley Bowles and colleagues suggests otherwise.  They found that women's reticence to negotiate for higher pay to be based not on so called 'deficiencies' but rather on an accurate assessment of the social costs that accrue to women who "ask". That is, women are less inclined to negotiate when they face a higher social risk from doing so. In this provocative presentation we will hear why women hold back and discuss how to approach compensation negotiations in a way that minimizes the social risks of asking and can lead to more positive outcomes.

>>>> Please RSVP by December 4 for “Sometimes It Does Hurt to Ask” to CGO@simmons.edu
