MBA Office Updates

Note from Mary D.

What a terrific win for the Celtics and, of course, I have some corollaries to your MBA program!! It had been 22 years since the Celtics last won a championship. They worked towards that goal every practice, every game, every season, every year-for 22 years!! It is the same for you in your MBA program but won't take nearly that long!! You are working towards a goal of getting your degree, learning new competencies, skills and abilities for an end goal of changing the future possibilities for you, and/or your family. Given where we are in a busy summer term, whether it is in the beginning or middle or end or your program, seeing people reach their goals is really motivating and fun to watch, and one of the reasons I love graduation so much!

When the Celtics were down and came back from a 24 point deficit, it was the result of never giving up, and always believing in yourself and your team. It certainly changed the momentum of the series and my job is to help you get through those moments when they happen in the MBA program!!  As managers, and leaders you will be faced with many moments that we saw with the Celtics over the last week: figuring out what skills and talents you need and hiring the right people who can work well together. What was apparent to me in this series was that even if you have the best player in the league, (Kobe Bryant), talent alone does not guarantee anything. Success is so much more than sheer talent. It is allowing everyone to have moments in the spotlight where they can shine and excel, leading them through tough moments where it is easy to give up, taking nothing for granted, knowing the inner satisfaction when you reach a goal you have strived for and worked hard to achieve, and celebrating both big and little victories as a group. It was a fun week!!

Broaching a schedule change with the boss

Q. Is it poor etiquette to ask to leave early after completing an eight-hour day? I'm a salaried, full-time employee of a large company, but I'm working on a special project for the next few weeks that requires me to start at 5 a.m., instead of the usual 8 a.m. I have been working through lunch, too, to get more done so I can get home and get to bed to start it all over again the next day. I've been so exhausted the last few weeks, but this is a huge project and opportunity. I'm also young and new to the company. The last thing I want is to look like I'm lazy, but we don't get paid overtime, and I'm already skipping my lunch hour. What do you think is the best course of action for me?

Peter Post is the great grandson of manners guru Emily Post and is the director of Emily Post Institute in Burlington, VT.

If you have not signed up for the room and a group who has comes to use it, then you need to give them preference in using the room. We appreciate you following this policy, especially during this period when many groups are meeting.
