MBA Office Updates

Note from Mary D.

Next week is a much deserved mid semester break for the fourth of July. It will come at a great time as for many students getting through June was the summer hurdle and you are almost there! Take some time over the holiday to rest, and have some fun with family and friends. You know that I really believe that when you get some down time, you are much more productive at work and school because your body and mind has had a chance to rest!

Quotes of the Week

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

-- Mark Twain

“A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination."

--Nelson Mandela

New Elective

Please be advised that the elective below will be added to the Fall schedule. Dates are still being determined but it will be a compressed weekend course, most likely in October/November. More info to follow.

GSM 503: Special Topics: Authentic Leadership

This is a course on how to design and manage organizations in which people from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds thrive and perform at their best. It assumes that strategically engaging strengths is the key to personal fulfillment and organizational excellence. The challenge in managing from this perspective is how do you architect contexts (jobs, organizational cultures, structures, processes) that enable employees and groups from diverse backgrounds to contribute from a position of strength? The challenge at a more personal level is in finding and/or creating a context in which you can thrive and contribute your best. This course will focus primarily on your personal quest to thrive, by examining your own strengths (and limitations), cultural insights, and professional experiences that enhance your capacity to lead authentically. As a secondary focus, we will consider the role of the manager in designing and fostering contexts where others can authentically engage their strengths for maximal growth and contribution.

This course draws from a new and exciting paradigm called Positive Organizational Scholarship (POS). Using the lens of POS, we will draw upon research and managerial practices that build human strengths and unlock the positive and generative dynamics of vibrant human communities. We will utilize case studies, assigned readings, class discussions, experiential exercises, and introspection to examine your own and others’ practices of leading authentically for organizational excellence and personal fulfillment. You will be expected to “show up” authentically within the class; your role will be to engage your own strengths to help create a collaborative, innovative learning environment that will support you and your classmates in your journeys of reflection, learning and growth.

Schedule Change

Please note the first class of GSM 420 A Financial Reporting & Analysis, will meet on September 15th, not 17th as printed in the original synopsis. For the most up to date information please visit:

Faculty Publications

Congratulations to Stacy Blake-Beard, whose Fall 2007 interview with Taylor Cox has been accepted as a peer-reviewed essay article for publication in the interdisciplinary journal Academy of Management Leadership Education.  Cox is a thought leader on diversity in organizations and has shaped the field for several decades.  Stacy also had a co-authored paper just accepted at Business and Society.

Deborah Kolb had a paper accepted in the journal Negotiation and Conflict Management Research. Vipin Gupta had his paper on “An Inquiry into the Characteristics of Entrepreneurship in India” accepted in the Journal of International Business Research.  And, Bruce Warren had an article titled “To Live, To Work, To Prosper: Do Illegal Aliens Have Legal Rights?“ published in Business Law Review.  Bruce addresses this topic in his ethics classes in the undergraduate management program.

Our new faculty have also had some great success in recent publication acceptances.  Barry Lin has had four papers accepted for publication in Review of Business Research, Journal of International Business Research, Financial Management, and Financial Analysts Journal. Lori Holder-Webb had two publications accepted in Journal of Business Ethics. And, Linda Boardman Liu had an article acceptedin Supply Chain Management: An International Journal.

Susan Hass’ book (co-authored), A Global Summary of the Common Body of Knowledge 2006, has now been published.  The book reflects the findings of a major research project on internal auditing standards.  This research has consumed much of Susan’s time in the past two years and it is great to see it reach fruition.

International Engagement

Lynda Moore, having just arrived back from her Fulbright-supported sabbatical in UAE, just gave a major talk on her research at The Arab International Women’s Forum (AIWF).  AIWF is partnering with the World Bank to host its first US conference, Partners for Change: Realizing the Potential of Arab Women in the Private and Public Sector, in Washington DC.  Her talk is entitled “Research on Emeriti Women Business Leaders: Implications for Leadership Education.”  It will be great to have Lynda back and to learn more about her very productive sabbatical.

Building on our expanding connections in India, Lynda, Stacy, and Vipin just had an article, “Women Managers In India: Status, Issues and Solutions,” in the National Human Resources Journal published in India.  And, the global Compendium on Family Business, for which Vipin Gupta and Lynda Moore served as editors, has been published – all 11 volumes – and is available for purchase at http://caseworldwide.com.   Simmons SOM and the Family Owned Business Institute at Grand Valley State University were sponsors for this compendium. Congratulations again to Vipin and Lynda for this major piece of work.

Career Expo – Thank You and Feedback

18 employers attended last week’s CAREER EXPO to meet both current MBA candidates as well as experienced alumnae from the SOM.  Guests included representatives from Boston Scientific, Genzyme, HP, State Street, IDG, MIT, Philips and several other organizations.  The event was held in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center for the first time, and feedback from both candidates and employers was extremely positive.  100% of employers said they found the event to be of value, and 96% met potential candidates for their organizations. Candidates enjoyed the new pilot format, overwhelmingly appreciating the opportunity to pre-schedule individual conversations with employers of interest – an idea generated by our amazing CSO Student Task Force!
Thank you to all those who participated, and please let us know of your progress.  For any students who were unable to join us, please let us know if you’d like to learn more about any of these organizations/opportunities.
Lastly, thank you to all for providing continuous feedback for future event planning. In addition to making changes to formatting, we are exploring other times to host this event in an effort to accommodate more part-time evening students.
