MBA Office Updates In talking with students this week, it appears like you have all successfully made it through midterms and the first major hill in the fall term!! Evening students have had finance, accounting and leading midterms all due and turned in, day students are just as busy through next week and then it should slow down on the midterm/exam/paper front for a while!! It is hard to believe that November is next week and Thanksgiving is a month away. But use this weekend or next weekend to give yourself some credit that you are managing to get it all done and stay sane (or reasonably sane!). For my sports nuts, Matt Cassel, the Patriots quarterback was named the AFC player of the week last week. 2 months ago, he wasn’t expected to even take the field for any part of the season. To me it shows what happens when preparation meets opportunity. This success will also be true for you. We are preparing you as well to take advantage of the opportunities that will allow you to showcase all of your great talents and skills in your current job or the next job you take after you graduate. SOMAA Student Representatives Needed! Join the School of Management Alumnae Association Board: An opportunity to gain non-profit board experience and connect with SOM alums! Apply by November 15, 2008. The Simmons School of Management Alumnae Association (SOMAA) is recruiting for two student representatives (one day student and one evening student,) to sit on the Board as non-voting members. Student Representatives are critical to the Alumnae Association as they represent the interests of current students, SOMAA’s pre-alumnae constituents. The Board of Directors is the leadership of the Alumnae Association. SOMAA’s goal is to ensure all alumnae maintain a sense of community and have opportunities to continue their personal and professional development. Not only does the Alumnae Association serve alumnae but it also supports and advances the SOM. Your time commitment as a student representative includes attendance at all board meetings. These are held as conference calls, with quarterly in person meetings at the SOM. You will lead the selection process for new Student Representatives at the completion of term of office. Additionally, you have the opportunity to work on a committee or on a special project. Your term would begin in January 2009. This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working on a non-profit board of directors, become involved and connected with the alumnae network, and have a voice in the direction of the Alumnae Association. MBA Staffing Updates Last week, the Dean announced that Denise Haile, our Director of Admissions had resigned and that Kerri Brophy had agreed to assume the position of Senior Director of Marketing and Admissions. As we head into a brand new building and AACSB accreditation visits set for February, it is an important time for the SOM to capitalize on these huge opportunities to further increase enrollments. In light of this opportunities and the fact that Darla Pires-DeGrace has 11 years of admissions experience, the Dean asked Darla to rejoin the admissions team. Darla, as many of you would expect, also wanted to keep part of her roles and responsibilities working with students and faculty in the Program office, so her new role will be 80% Admissions and Marketing and 20% in the Program office. She will be moving upstairs with the Marketing/Admissions team in the next few weeks, but will still be very involved in the certificates, BAMBA, student advising and foundations. The second part of our update is to let you know that Katlyn Cavanaugh, one of our Coordinators in Academic Programs will be headed out on maternity leave no later than November 15 and is expecting to return in February. We are developing a plan that will utilize Nicole, Paula and Karen more as well as our student workers to help cover everything we need to do and still deliver quality service!! We will let you know as soon as plans are finalized! Undergraduate Networking Dinner We are looking for MBA students that are free on Nov. 13 to come to a undergrad networking dinner and talk to undergrads about your work, your career path, etc. It will be from 5:30-8:30pm and on the main campus. CGO Event on Gender, Culture, and Success Topic: Gender, Culture and Success: How Latina “cultural scripts” affect the career success of mid-level managers One of the hallmarks of the CGO perspective is what we call “gender in all its complexity.” By that we mean that in order to understand the experience of women at work, we must take into account the way different aspects of social identity such as race, ethnicity, age and sexual orientation operate simultaneously to influence gender dynamics in organizations. Latinas as a group represent the simultaneity of race, ethnicity, class and gender. In this presentation, and celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Dr. Holvino explores the experience of Latina mid-level managers in Fortune 1000 corporations using the concept of “cultural scripts.” She will explain the concept and describe the way in which these scripts both support and challenge Latinas leadership and career development. Finally, drawing on this understanding of the role cultural scripts play in organizational life she leads us in a discussion of strategies to increase support and effectiveness for managing the scripts and cultural challenges that rise from diversity in the workplace.
