MBA Office Updates Well it is clear from the Patriots performance last Sunday that I should switch sports to find my analogy, so I will turn to the Red Sox. This week the Red Sox clinched a spot in the baseball playoffs. The important analogy was that at the beginning of the year, that was the goal. Get to the playoffs and they did. But think about what they had to do in btn and that involved playing 162 games, one game at a time, one month at a time. For all of you in the MBA program, think of what the end goal is-to learn as much as you can and get your MBA. But, for some of you it will be one class at a time, one week at a time, one semester at a time, but with hard work, patience, perseverance, preparation, and practice, you will get there too!! As I have talked with many students this week, it is clear that we are entering the middle part of the semester. Papers are due, some exams are on the horizon, and group projects are in progress, etc. Plus, you have the normal workloads of being ready for each class. But remember that co-curricular events such as the Business Plan competition next Friday or other talks and events are really important supplements to your classroom learning. Many of you are all still adjusting to the being back in school or even a new term with different workloads than before. Use your faculty, Darla and me if we can help you identify strategies to keep you moving forward and don’t be afraid to ask for help! “Continuous effort-not strength or intelligence, is the key to unlocking your potential." --Winston Churchill “Desire is the key to motivation, but it is determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal, a commitment to excellence –that will enable you to obtain the success you seek.” -- Mario Andretti Announcements An SOM student locked her bike outside Mockler on Wednesday night and it was stolen while she was in class. We have a bike rack across the street down the stairs and out of sight. We have not had a theft in the last couple of years, but we would encourage you all to use it if you can as Marlborough St has been a target for bike thefts over the years. Please do not keep your bikes inside the building in classrooms or hallways. Thanks! The MBA Office will host track meetings on Wednesday, October 14th, from 5-6pm for evening students and Monday October 6th, from 11:30am-12:30pm for day students. Track meetings are with Mary D. and Darla. Students can discuss how the semester is going, ask questions, and talk about any concerns you may be having. Lunch/dinner is served and it's a great chance to meet up with other classmates and see how their semester is going as well! MBA Office Email - mba@simmons.edu Returning Student Mentors Needed! We have started a new Pre-MBA program this fall that has some students interested in the MBA program taking either Leading or Accounting and also studying for the Kaplan course. We would like to offer some returning students to serve as mentors to them with questions, concerns, how you balance school with all the other things in your life etc. if you are interested, please email Christine.carr2@simmons.edu in Admissions or Darla.pires-degrace@simmons.edu in the Program office. We don’t think it will take much time, but it could really help a student thinking about her MBA! Current Students Needed to Mentor Undergraduate Students! I had a meeting with some undergrads last night who are looking to learn from MBA students and be mentored by them. If any new or current students are interested in mentoring our undergrad majors, please email Mary D. at mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu and we will try and match you!! Simmons College Honor Board Seeks an SOM MBA Student Representative Simmons College has an Honor Board that serves as the group that investigates all charges of academic integrity at the College. Simmons Consulting GroupThe mission of the Consulting Club is to provide career exploration in the field of Consulting. Whether your interests are in a specific field of consulting or you are just exploring the consulting industry, our events will help bring you closer to determining your career objectives. Entrepreneurship ClubAre you interested in starting and growing a new business or expanding a current business? The Entrepreneurship Club will:
Entrepreneurship is more than a set of tools and techniques for starting and growing a business. It's a mindset, a way of looking at things that is opportunity focused and creative. It's about passion -- doing what you love. It's about creating wealth in all its forms: money, independence, power, and innovation. It's about challenge and persistence. And it's about creativity and writing new execution strategies for the way things are done. Ethics ClubThe mission of the Ethics Club is to serve as a learning resource to Simmons MBA students for a wide range of business ethics issues. The club will examine how ethical decisions impact business successes or failures. Areas of interest include sustainability; economic, social and environmental concerns; corporate accountability; ethical decision making; socially responsible investing; and social enterprise. The assumption is that ethical issues are complex business dilemmas for which better decisions can be found through ongoing discussion. Finance/Investment ClubThe focus of this group is to learn more about the topics of finance and personal investing, build on the knowledge learned in the classroom and network with other students working in or pursuing a career in finance. Project Management ClubIt has been said that you lead people and manage projects... while that's an ongoing OB debate, take a step toward understanding project management and share your experiences with others by participating in a student group dedicated to Project Management. Student Academic CouncilThe Student Academic Council (SAC) is a volunteer group that serves an advisory role to the MBA Office. The SAC mission is to enhance students' educational experience inside and outside of the classroom and further the MBA office goal of continuous improvement to the MBA program. Some of SAC roles include representing students' interests within the SOM community on current or proposed changes to the MBA program, and serving as a liaison between students, faculty, the administration, and the alumnae. Social ClubThe Social Club is a group of students from both the day and evening programs that help plan social events for students throughout the year. Women of Color ClubMission statement is to empower, develop, and enrich the lives of the SOM women of color through personal and professional development.
