It is hard to believe that next weekend is week 7 and the 4th of July!  The stamina award of the week goes to the students finishing their degree requirements in August as they came off a marathon school weekend where they were here Friday night, double class on Saturday, double class on Sunday, class Monday and Tuesday and many had electives on Wednesday and Thursday. They are definitely through the worst of their summer now and are heading into their home stretch! I know that many of you are coming off an accounting midterm and preparing for a QA midterm, but then also go into the holiday weekend with some big deliverables behind you!! I gave all of you Monday, July 6 off in the academic calendar so that you could feel that you had some tiny break in the middle of the summer! Go to a cookout, sit with your family and friends and watch some fireworks, and have some fun!

Fall 2009 Registration Changes

Jill Avery has agreed to teach a hybrid/independent study course in Consumer Behavior that will meet three times over the fall term in the 4-6 slot and the rest will be independent online learning.This will be a 2 credit elective course and once we have the description and dates completed, we will send a special email!

Planning your Courses - Do NOT use AARC

When planning your schedules we ask that you do NOT use AARC for the dates. AARC can read very confusing with our complicated schedules. Students Finishing Their Degree Requirements in August

Many documents will be coming your way for the August reception as we order your diplomas and plan the reception. You will have the opportunity to nominate colleagues to give remarks from your class, receive the SOMAA Principled Leadership Award and the Pat Miller Award. Please pay attention to the deadlines on nominations and forms needed to order your diplomas!

Dean's Reception Ceremony for Students Finishing Their Degree Requirements in August

The Dean's Reception will be held in the Paresky Center on August 29th, 2009 from 4:30-6pm. An evite will be coming out this week or early next week. If you are finishing your degree requirements this August you should have received an email from Paula Bent on Wednesday. If you did not receive that email and you believe you should have, please email Paula at paula.bent@simmons.edu.

2010 Boston Fellows and Boston Associates Program: Early Application Deadline Approaching!

This is a reminder that first round applications and nominations for our 2010 Boston Associates and Boston Fellows Programs are due by June 30, 2009. 

Those who apply during the early application process will receive a 20% discount on tickets to attend our December 1, 2009 Celebration and Graduation, at the Seaport/World Trade Center, Boston. This will provide a wonderful opportunity for new program participants to network with the current class.

College Technology Resource Center Upcoming Programs: PTRC Workshop: Excel Formulas

Jun 30th, 2009 through July 30, 2009 from 8am at 2pm, P113.

The PTRC offers a variety of workshops at no charge to the Simmons community. Both our Office Productivity and Web/Multimedia workshops are offered through Learning Tracks in which workshop presenters often build upon knowledge gained in previous sessions. You may register for individual workshops though provided you have the prerequisite knowledge. We also offer workshops in Simmons-specific applications and other topics based upon demand and special request. For more information email ptrc@simmons.edu.

SOM EXEC IN RESIDENCE FOR 2009 IS CONFIRMED: Pat Fil Krushel, September 21-23, 2009

Patricia Fili-Krushel is Executive Vice President of Administration of Time Warner Inc.

In this role, Ms. Fili-Krushel works closely with the other members of Time Warner’s senior management team and its operating divisions on a variety of organizational, developmental and diversity issues. Her responsibilities include oversight of philanthropy, corporate human resources, worldwide recruitment, employee development and growth, compensation and benefits, and security.

Before joining Time Warner in July 2001, Ms. Fili-Krushel had been CEO of WebMD Health since April 2000.

From July 1998 to April 2000, Ms. Fili-Krushel was President of the ABC Television Network. ABC Television Network’s ranking improved from third to first in the ratings during her tenure. Prior to becoming President of the ABC Television Network, Ms. Fili-Krushel was President of ABC Daytime, and was responsible for introducing the daytime talk show "The View” and for leading ABC's daytime programming schedule to the number one position among women 18-49 years old. While at ABC, she conceived and orchestrated SoapNet, a 24-hour soap opera cable network.

Before joining ABC in 1993, Ms. Fili-Krushel had been with Lifetime Television since 1988 as both Group Vice President of Hearst/ABC-Viacom Entertainment Services (HAVES), and Senior Vice President of Programming and Production of Lifetime Television. Prior to Lifetime, Ms. Fili-Krushel held several positions with Home Box Office, culminating her tenure as Vice President of Business Affairs and Production. Before joining HBO, Ms. Fili-Krushel worked for ABC in various positions, including Program Controller for ABC Sports.

Ms. Fili-Krushel holds a B.S. degree from St. John’s University and an M.B.A. degree from Fordham University.

In 1998, Fortune featured Ms. Fili-Krushel among its “50 Most Powerful Women.” She has been recognized by New York Women in Communications, Inc. through their Matrix Awards for her contribution to the field of broadcasting. In 2006, she was inducted into the Museum of Television & Radio’s “She Made It” Collection. She received the prestigious Vision Award for her contributions on behalf of the creative arts. The City of New York awarded Ms. Fili-Krushel the Crystal Apple Award for her distinctive career achievements and contributions to the entertainment community in New York. In 1993, she received the Women in Film Muse Award.

Ms. Fili-Krushel serves on the Board of Trustees of The Public Theater of New York where she is Chair of the Nominating Committee, the Board of Trustees of The Paley Center for Media, and Mayor Bloomberg’s Commission on Women’s Issues.

Greetings SOM Students!

On behalf of Technology at Simmons, welcome to the Main Campus!  Technology is here to help you have a smooth semester start as you settle in to your new space!

• For other tip sheets and descriptions of technology resources visit my.simmons.edu/technology/students  We even have some podcasts on iTunes U.
  
• Need help with your computer?  Sign up for a Technology Self Help Clinic by calling (617-521.-2222) or emailing helpdesk@simmons.edu.
  
• Media Services has a variety of equipment is available for you to borrow including laptops and cameras: my.simmons.edu/services/technology/media
  
• The Technology Desk on the 1st floor of the Beatley Library Information Commons is staffed with Simmons students eager to help you use the computers and study rooms available to you throughout the Library. This includes the Media Viewing and Listening Room, where you may watch or listen to DVDs, VHS tapes, and broadcasts.

• At the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor you may borrow, among other items, a laptop that has the Bloomberg application on it.

• Do you wish to enhance your software skills?  Go to ptrc.simmons.edu for a course catalog and to sign up for a workshop.

In addition to all of the resources around campus, the new SOM building has computing spaces available to you.

• The MBA Resource Room on the 1st floor houses six computers and both a black/white and color pay-for-print printer.  Two of the computers are Macs that run Windows Vista or Mac OS X Leopard.

• The MBA Living Room on the 2nd floor contains two Express Web Stations. 

• There are also seven study rooms, all of which include a computer.  In addition, M205 and M230 include the following:
• Large screen LCD monitor
• Auxiliary audio and video inputs (e.g. for laptop)
• VCR/DVD player
• Audio/video recording (beta service: requires prior training)

Stay tuned for additional information about the College, including Technology’s services and resources by reading the MySimmons announcements on a regular basis. 

We are happy to assist you, so please let us know what we can do to help you get acclimated to the Main Campus.
