MBA Office Updates Note From Mary D. Mary D’s Sports Analogies for those that like them “You create your opportunities by asking for them.”-- Patty Hansen “Not doing more than the average is what keeps the average down.”-- William Winans Spring 2010 Registration Health Care Certificate Program Are you interested in the Health Care Certificate program? The deadline to apply is March 1st, 2010! For more information please email Darla at darla.pires-degrace@simmons.edu. Congratulations to Linda Boardman Liu! Prof. Liu successfully defended her dissertation last week at BU and has completed her doctorate. She is now Dr. Linda Boardman Liu! As all of you know because you are in a graduate program, finishing your doctorate is another major accomplishment in one’s career! Schedule Reminders for Next Week Kija Kim, 4pm, M222, Tuesday, November 10. Celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week! Nov. 16-20, 2009 Participate in the Simmons College “What’s Your Bid Idea?” pitch contest. All students welcome. $300 prize to winner in graduate and undergraduate categories. Guidelines for participation attached. If you have questions, contact: Susan.Duffy@Simmons.edu or call 617-521-3848. NEGOTIATIONS: If UAE runs, we will cancel the Negotiations Friday/Saturday weekend time slot (March 5 and 6)and move those weekend classes to March 4, 18, 25 in its normal Thursday night slot, 6-9pm. If UAE does not run, we will keep the Friday/Saturday weekend time slot as scheduled. Students who have any other conflicts should really try and take the day section from January 20-26 or wait until the Fall! STRAT 1/SDM: Priority for this spring section is going to August 2010 students who are finishing up. January 20-23,2011 is the next time slot for this course and if you know you cannot make it in January 2011 now, please let Mary D know. 21st CENTURY HEALTH CARE: Days of the week are right, times are right but we were off a day on both, it is January 22 and 23. SUSTAINABILTY: Start date is correct at January 21. CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION: This course being offered over intersession is a great 2 cr compressed elective for consideration. The Confusion Over SDM/Strategy 1/Strategy 2/Strategy and Leadership There have been some totally understandable confusion over all these sections and courses, who is taking what, when should they take it, etc. Let me try and explain it again to see if we can clear up some of the confusion! The Strategy 1 section is designed for brand new MBA students who have had no other coursework. The Strat1/SDM section is designed for MBA students that have had a lot of coursework. You are all just in very different places academically and wanted to gear the course appropriately. Strategy 1 is the course that all new students coming in after Sept 09 take. Anyone who entered this fall took this section and is done! The next part of this sequence is Strategy 2. Current students who were in progress earlier than this September are in a group that needs a section called Strategy1/SDM. If you are graduating this summer, you take Strat1/SDM. If you are not, we have another section next January, January 20-23, 2011, for the rest of you already scheduled! If you know now that you can't make that weekend, we will try and get you into this summer's section! Strategy and Leadership, and Strategy 2, are the same course and this is the capstone course all MBA’s take the semester they are graduating. Gain non-profit board experience and connect with SOM alums - Join the School of Management Alumnae Association Board Interested in serving on a non-profit board? Wish to serve in a leadership capacity between your fellow students and the alumnae community? Want to make a difference in the SOM Alumnae community? If so, then joining the School of Management Alumnae Association (SOMAA) Board of Directors as a Student Representative could be an exciting next step in your MBA career. SOMAA is recruiting for two Student Representatives (one full time, one part time) from the Class of 2011 to sit on the Board as non-voting members. Student Representatives are critical to the Alumnae Association as they represent the interests of current students, SOMAA’s pre-alumnae constituents. SOMAA plays an important role by acting as the liaison between the SOM and both its direct alumnae community and that of Simmons College overall. As a 15 member board, it strives to foster engagement though advocacy, programming and special events that advance both alumnae development and the strategic initiatives of the SOM. As a Student Representative, you will have the opportunity to work closely with other board members on a variety of initiatives, as well as lead the selection process for future Student Representatives. Commitment to serving on the board requires attending monthly board meetings held the first Monday of every month. Your year-long term as a Student Representative would begin in January 2010 and end January 2011 with the option to renew your term if you are still an SOM student. This is a wonderful opportunity to extend your leadership skills in a non-profit setting, while maintaining a close connection to the SOM as you progress in the program. To apply, please email a copy of your resume and a statement of interest to Maicharia Weir Lytle (mzweirlytle@gmail.com) by November 15, 2009. If you would like more information including a full position description before applying, please contact our current Student Representatives: Meara Ryan: kathleen.ryan@simmons.edu Jennifer Clark: jennifer.clark@novartis.com In an effort to give the UAE travel course every opportunity to enroll, we are going to extend the application and payment deadline for the UAE trip. We need a minimum of 14 students to enroll for it to run, and we are at 11 as of today! · New application deadline: November 10 with a deposit; · Deadline to receive your deposit back: November 12; · 1st payment due: November 16 with a total due of $1600 (includes the $200 deposit); · 2nd payment due: January 15 for the remaining balance of $1600. Course remains open until November 7, 2009 as the deadline for registration and full payment of travel costs. For MBA students it is GSM 547 Sustainable Business in Emerging Global Markets. · Due to the increased flight costs, we have to increase the travel component to $3500. This cost will cover the airfare increases per student as well as all on ground accommodations, meals and transportation. · We will offer an early return option for any MBA student needing to return early for the Entrepreneurship course on January 16. The cost remains the same, as we will have additional surcharges to fly you out of Bombay and back to Boston on January 14. · Dates will remain January 2-18th for all students with an early return option for MBA students of January 14th. · We will need some combination of at least 12 MBA and UG students who have fully paid the travel portion by November 7. If we do not have that number of students and full payment, we will need to cancel the course and all monies paid or deposited will be refunded.
Reminder about Class Norms Please remember that coming in and out of class, coming late on a regular basis for no really good reason is very disruptive to your classmates and your faculty. Please try and wait for the breaks to get coffee or answer your emails, and as much as possible, do not schedule outside commitments so tightly that you need to leave class to make them on time. Our goal is to have everyone be fully engaged with what is going on in class, and it is the time of year where norms tend to start to slip. Thanks! The India Travel Course is Back On... Great News: Ranking Top 20 in Aspen Institute's Beyond
Grey Pinstripes ranking -
The ranking methodology is rigorous. As the Business and Society Program notes, “While many MBA rankings
exist, only one looks beyond reputation and test scores to measure something
much more important: how well schools are preparing their students for the
environmental, social and ethical complexities of modern-day business.” In formulating their rankings, the program
reviews curricula, course syllabi, and faculty publications. This year, 149 business schools from 24
countries competed to ranked in the top 100.
“In these challenging
economic times, the general public, not just scholars, are questioning
whether the established models of business are broken,” said Rich Leimsider,
Director of the Aspen Institute’s Center for Business Education. “Beyond Grey Pinstripes schools are
thoughtfully pursuing new approaches. They are preparing students who take a more holistic view of business
success, one that measures financial results as well as social and
environmental impacts.”
In this ranking, we are in great company. Among the top 15 schools are: U. of
Michigan (Ross), Yale School of
Management, Stanford Graduate School
of Business, Notre Dame (Mendoza), UC Berkeley (Haas), NYU (Stern), and
Columbia Business School, U. of Virginia (Darden), Cornell (Johnson), GWU
School of Business. I am also pleased that we were ranked significantly ahead
of local competitors – Babson is #26, BU is #56, Bentley is #67, and Boston
College (Carroll) is #73. Our #15 gives us a great competitive edge in
recruiting MBA students! Given the relevance of these issues to undergraduate
students, we will leverage this ranking to increase visibility for the entire
school, not just the MBA. |
