MBA Office Updates If you were at school yesterday you know that it was a historic moment as the site team had a unanimous recommendation for us to get AACSB accreditation in April. Even though we had many positive signals during the visit, I have to admit I took a big gulp when we were all at the table yesterday and they began to talk! But as soon as they said we got it, that feeling for what it meant to the school was something I can treasure for many years!! For those of you at school yesterday, you heard that one part of their report is to send back to AACSB best practices and these deans had normally done an average of 4, but they cut it back to 12 for the SOM and that was really a wonderful testimony to the faculty, staff and students about what happens in this community. You should be very proud!! In April, we will join a very elite group of schools that have this accreditation and it really is an external validation of the excellence of your degree!! The 23 students that represented all of you on Monday night with the site team were terrific and the site team couldn’t believe the consistency of what they heard from them, each in their own words about the SOM experience and why they came to this program. MBA students who were on the site team visit included: Georgina Michael, Alison Haight, Lauren Grymek, Gail Parente, Candace Shreve, Lisa Craig, Rachel Anderson, Olivia Handerson, Lisa Perry, Sarah Stevenson, Laurie Bennett, Colette Hendricks, Nancy Buzby, Alyson Loria, Aparna Lahiri, Meret Peter, Amy Blackshaw, Beth Dunn, Lindsay Noll, Oana Ghiga, Ali Pincus, Cat Rojo, and Karen Hartke.
Given we worked on accreditation for 10 years, I thought this quote was a good one! “Desire is the key to motivation, but it is determination and commitment to an unrelenting pursuit of your goal, a commitment to excellence."-Mario Andretti This quote is to acknowledge that an effort of this size, scope and length always involves a ton of people, but particularly the lead of the Associate Dean Deb Marlino. Deb was the faculty lead of accreditation since day one!! As MBA students, think of agreeing to lead something this important in your organization and what a level of personal and organizational commitment it takes to stay with it for 10 years, never losing site of the goal or its importance. We are very lucky to have had her dedication and leadership in this effort. ”Quality is never an accident; it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution; it represents the wise choice of many” Unknown.

RSVP Today: http://somevents.simmons.edu/1999/jessica-marshall-forbes-of-raverlycom#more-262 Net Impact Brown Bag Session - Tuesday, March 17th from 12-1 pm Topic: The Accumulation of Disadvantage: A Simulation of How Perceptions Advance Women's Leadership Organizations have used a wide range of strategies in an effort to increase the proportion of women in leadership. Understanding which interventions are most effective, however, can be difficult. In this presentation, Professor Barbara Lawrence, drawing on the work she has done with co-authors Jim Blythe and Cathy McGrath, offers a simulation-based approach to reproduce the micro-dynamics of hiring, retention and promotion decisions. Eventually, this simulation will facilitate comparisons of explanatory theories and organizational interventions that produce effective change. This Speaker Series session will include an overview of this exciting new approach, a discussion of the critical simulation parameters, and a chance to think about how to apply this approach to your organization. For more information on CGO events, check out the CGO website under “News and Events,” or become a fan of the CGO Facebook page, to keep up to date with CGO news and announcements. Also, be sure to join us next month, April 29, 2009 in welcoming Karen Proudford of Morgan State University, for a talk on “Putting conflict in its proper place: a look at outside influences on competition and controversy among women.” This talk examines the influence of cross-gender interactions on the relationships among women, such that conflict originates outside and erupts within woman-to-woman interactions. Implications for building networks of supportive relationships among women, and for establishing a solid base of support for women in leadership, will be discussed. The 2008/09 Speakers Series is sponsored by The TJX Companies, Inc. Contact Person: Kerri Kivolowitz, CGO Coordinator (cgo@simmons.edu) Little Known Fact
Little Known Fact is a new, free, weekly gathering by and for the students of the Simmons College School of Management that will be hosted by Beth Dunn, MBA student, ’09. A casual, fun, and friendly series consisting of brief presentations, fellowship, and food, Little Known Fact will bring together full-time and part-time MBA students of all cohorts, undergraduates, faculty, and staff Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the new School of Management building. SOM students have longed for a third place – not the classroom, not the bar – in which they could build real community and strengthen important relationships within the vibrant Simmons community. Little Known Fact will provide a consistent and compelling focus for this diverse community, by drawing on and celebrating the unique skills and talents of current SOM students. Each weekly gathering will feature a brief, five-minute presentation by a current SOM student, who will share her Little Known Fact – some hidden skill or talent that would otherwise go unnoticed in the fast-paced rush of the semester. After the presentation, attendees will ask questions and discuss their own experiences on the subject. Whether it’s How to hail a cab in six different languages or How to make a stunning necklace in 30 seconds, each session will present a lighthearted, but intriguing glimpse into the lives of our fellow students. No college gathering is complete without free food, so light fare, snacks, coffee, tea, and soda will be provided at each weekly session. Expand your horizons, learn new skills, and meet your SOM colleagues this Spring Semester at Little Known Fact, Wednesday afternoons beginning February 4 from 4:00 – 5:00 pm in the second floor lounge at the top of the stairs.
