MBA Office Updates It is clear from talking to many of you this week that Spring Break is a much needed rest from classes and winter!! The one thing I have told many of you is that it is really normal for this to be the low point of the semester and you are halfway through spring term and need a week to recharge your energy and brain power for the second half of the term!! Promise me that you will do something fun with family or friends and catch up on all the things that have been put on the back burner with school!! When you return, spring will be only 5 days away and some warmer days with flowers getting ready to bloom is a sure sign that things are turning!! "Some folks go through life pleased that the glass is half full. Others spend a lifetime lamenting that it's half-empty. The truth is: There is a glass with a certain volume of liquid in it. From there, it's up to you!" --Dr. James S. Vuocolo "The only limit to your impact is your imagination and commitment." --Anthony Robbins "The only lifelong, reliable motivations are those that come from within, and one of the strongest of those is the joy and pride that grow from knowing that you've just done something as well as you can do it." --Lloyd Dobens and Clare Crawford-Mason
Susan Hass's Managerial Accounting Class-Rescheduled Due to the snow day, Susan Hass has rescheduled the Accounting Classes for the following dates, and has also included two review sessions: Wednesday, April 1st: 10am -12pm (Make-up for Day Section) Our office will be open from M-Th, 8:30-6pm and Friday, 8:30-4:30pm. Travel Course MBA Students Marching in Graduation 2009 I know that many of you are anxious to know what we will do for students finishing degree requirements this August and I will have the final answer for you when you return from Spring Break! Mary D is also happy to meet with any students that want to talk about it! In last week’s update, Mary D neglected to include Katinka Stenius, who also was at the MBA student portion of the site visit. We wanted to make sure that we acknowledged her participation and the fact that Mary was typing too fast and just missed including her!! March 19, 4:15-6pm April 27, 3-5pm. This is a change from the original April 22 dates Will be released tomorrow, March 5 or Monday, March 9 at the latest! Registration for summer will open March 16 for SOM MBA students! If you choose to use a room without a reservation, please be aware that a student or group who has reserved it may come by to claim it, and if they do, please be courteous and leave promptly! You may currently reserve a room for a 2-hour block, but if no one comes by to claim it with a reservation after your time is up, you are welcome to stay longer. Spring Break is Coming! March 9-March 13, no day or evening classes. The Academic Programs Office will be open until 6pm each night. The Admissions Team is launching a SOM Student Ambassador Program (SAP) and we need your help!

Understanding which interventions are most effective, however, can be difficult. In this presentation, Professor Barbara Lawrence, drawing on the work she has done with co-authors Jim Blythe and Cathy McGrath, offers a simulation-based approach to reproduce the micro-dynamics of hiring, retention and promotion decisions. Eventually, this simulation will facilitate comparisons of explanatory theories and organizational interventions that produce effective change. This Speaker Series session will include an overview of this exciting new approach, a discussion of the critical simulation parameters, and a chance to think about how to apply this approach to your organization. For more information on CGO events, check out the CGO website under “News and Events,” or become a fan of the CGO Facebook page, to keep up to date with CGO news and announcements. Also, be sure to join us next month, April 29, 2009 in welcoming Karen Proudford of Morgan State University, for a talk on “Putting conflict in its proper place: a look at outside influences on competition and controversy among women.” This talk examines the influence of cross-gender interactions on the relationships among women, such that conflict originates outside and erupts within woman-to-woman interactions. Implications for building networks of supportive relationships among women, and for establishing a solid base of support for women in leadership, will be discussed. The 2008/09 Speakers Series is sponsored by The TJX Companies, Inc. Contact Person: Kerri Kivolowitz, CGO Coordinator (cgo@simmons.edu) |
