MBA Office Updates

Note From Mary D.

I will be on vacation from Tuesday, March 18 through Wednesday, March 26, but know that Darla, Paula and Paola are all around if you need help with anything! I would ask you all to fill out the Noel Levitz survey this week that is being done online for the first time. This is a really important survey to the SOM as it is gives us specific data about your overall satisfaction with your SOM academic experience. The College administers it every other year and we are benchmarked against the last time we completed it, all the other graduate schools at Simmons as well as the national statistics. Historically, we have had very high percentages of students completing the survey and I hope you will all take the time to complete it!! Know that I will be bugging you to do it, as will Darla, and many students complete it because it is easier than listening to me!! Thanks!

The National Net Impact Organization 2008 Guide To MBA Programs

This Net Impact guide profiles business programs and provides the student perspective on environmental and social themes in curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and career services.  The 2006 and 2007 editions of the Guide have been downloaded more than 6,000 times by prospective students, the press, Net Impact members, and many more.  Last year, Simmons SOM ranked really well including:

  • 3rd in "Program prepares all students for ethical and socially responsible leadership"
  • 3rd in "Administrative and faculty support of Net Impact themes in the curriculum"
  • 1st in "Strong in social enterprise"

Net Impact is asking you to give your input by taking a 5 minute survey which will help them to understand how your business program is tackling environmental and social topics. Click the following link to take the survey!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=rlJdNjwvr2JWl2w45gbBHA_3d_3d

Each program profiled needs at least 10 student members to respond to the survey in order to have its data included in the Guide, so please take a few minutes to represent your chapter! The survey closes April 21, 2008.

Track Meetings

The Day Track Meeting is scheduled for Thursday March 27th from 12p.m. to 1p.m. in Caseroom 2. Lunch will be served!

For the January Admitted students a track meeting will be hosted on April 10th from 5p.m. to 6p.m. in Caseroom 1. Food will be served!

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring takes place through e-mail, instead of face-to-face in the Writing Center. It involves you sending an email with your document attached to our online tutor. She, in turn, will read your writing and give you feedback in the form of inserted comments. She will then email your document back to you, and you are ready to begin revisions!

Like our face-to-face tutors, the online tutor will look for patterns in your writing and comment on issues such as organization, clarity, grammar, and documentation. In addition to her comments, the tutor may refer you to outside resources to get additional practice on issues such as grammar or documentation.

ODAR is currently seeking volunteers for Part II of our Spring Phonathon on the evenings of Tuesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 3. We begin each night with training, so even if you have never volunteered before, you will be comfortable on the phone. In fact, our Phonathons are a wonderful opportunity for you to sharpen your fundraising and networking skills, which are useful in any field. Please join us to help the SOM reach its goals for 2008. This year's priorities include: strengthening Institutional Growth and Stature, expanding our Global Presence, integrating Innovative Teaching through Technology and adding electives focused on Corporate Social Responsibility. Financial Aid News for the 2008-2009 Academic Year

It's time to re-apply for financial aid for the 2008-09 academic year!  The summer term is the beginning of a new year for financial aid, and graduate student awards are already being mailed out.

If you would like to apply for aid for the summer, or for the full 2008-09 academic year, please complete a couple of simple forms:
1.) The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)--use Simmons' school code 002208
2.) The Graduate Supplemental Information Form

You do not need to wait until you file tax returns to complete the FAFSA, in fact, you shouldn't wait until you file taxes!  Your FAFSA can be filed with estimated tax information and can be updated at a later date.  This will help to ensure that you are allowing enough time for your application to be reviewed and awarded.

If you have questions about the application process, please contact your assigned financial aid officer.  Students are assigned a financial aid officer based on the first letter of their last name.

News & Events

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Time: 12 noon – 1:30PM

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Boris Groysberg, Harvard Business School

Topic: Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?

Professor Groysberg's research focuses on the challenges of managing professional service firms, especially how firms develop, hire, retain, and utilize star knowledge workers. In this presentation he will discuss the issue of portability and the surprising findings from a study of investment banking professionals that women are able to maintain their star rankings more reliably than men after changing employers.  It appears that there are a number of things that occur in the process of becoming stars that make female analysts portable in a way their male colleagues are not.  Professor Groysburg will discuss these factors and lead a discussion about the practical implications of his findings for women, men and the field of knowledge work.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu by March 21, 2008 for “Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?”

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.

Making Innovation Happen with McKinsey, Staples and State Street

Are you responsible for driving innovation in your company?  Interested in learning more about key dimensions that support and enable innovation in an organization?

Research by McKinsey & Company shows that the combination of leadership, organization and culture are among the most influential dimensions to drive innovation in high-performing organizations.  Creating an innovative organization requires addressing the right combination of mindsets and support.  In addition, leaders play an essential role in protecting the innovators from the organization's natural tendency to squash anything different.  McKinsey has also found that the social networks in a company - the informal way people connect and get work done - is vital to coordinating innovation activity.

But how does that translate into day-to-day innovation leadership?  Marla Capozzi, an expert associate principal at McKinsey and author of the research study, will review the findings, while alums Andrew Schneider, Director of Global Brand Management at Staples and Rebecca Schechter (SM '96), SVP of Product Development and Strategy at State Street Global Markets, offer practitioners' perspective.

Please contact Sean Brown with any questions.
