Note From Mary D.

As many of you know, I have just returned from vacation at Disneyworld with my family and regardless of your feelings about the company, and its brand, I found it fascinating from a business school perspective on so many levels. One is marketing-they are brilliant at marketing their products everywhere you turn, every ride lands you walking through a Disney store to buy something, customized to the theme of the ride or experience. That mouse is everywhere!! But my favorite perspective is the operations perspective where they continue to amaze me with simple things like parking, or the fast pass concept which is a free service for the most popular rides allowing you to do something else and then return to the ride at a specific time-who thought of that idea?? But I like to think about logistics of how they move food and beverages in and out of the park, how many meals a day they serve and just how many ice creams they order a week.  I love that stuff and even though I am not as big a fan as my husband and daughter, I still had a great time!!

But, while I was away having fun, you weren’t!! I realize that it is a tough time of the semester where many of you can’t have April 18 come fast enough, with presentations, projects, and finals all still coming. Hang in there and know that a break is coming soon!!

Quotes of the week

Walt Disney

I knew if this business was ever to get anywhere, if this business was ever to grow, it could never do it by having to answer to someone unsympathetic to its possibilities, by having to answer to someone with only one thought or interest, namely profits. For my idea of how to make profits has differed greatly from those who generally control businesses such as ours. I have blind faith in the policy that quality, tempered with good judgment and showmanship, will win against all odds."

You can dream, create, design and build the most wonderful place in the world, but it requires people to make the dream a reality.

David Refkin, Director of Sustainable Development, Time Inc.
Caren Arnstein, Senior Vice President, Corporate Affairs, Genzyme Corporation
Kim Frawley, Director, Worldwide Philanthropy, Pfizer Inc.
Richard Pearl, Vice President and CSR Officer, State Street Corporation

The National Net Impact Organization 2008 Guide To MBA Programs

This Net Impact guide profiles business programs and provides the student perspective on environmental and social themes in curriculum, extra-curricular activities, and career services.  The 2006 and 2007 editions of the Guide have been downloaded more than 6,000 times by prospective students, the press, Net Impact members, and many more.  Last year, Simmons SOM ranked really well including:

  • 3rd in "Program prepares all students for ethical and socially responsible leadership"
  • 3rd in "Administrative and faculty support of Net Impact themes in the curriculum"
  • 1st in "Strong in social enterprise"

Net Impact is asking you to give your input by taking a 5 minute survey which will help them to understand how your business program is tackling environmental and social topics. Click the following link to take the survey!

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=rlJdNjwvr2JWl2w45gbBHA_3d_3d

Each program profiled needs at least 10 student members to respond to the survey in order to have its data included in the Guide, so please take a few minutes to represent your chapter! The survey closes April 21, 2008.

Registration Updates

Summer registration officially closed this week and some electives are in danger of not filling capacity which means they may be canceled. If you are considering registering for an elective please let Paula Bent know ASAP so we can make decisions this week on what will be canceled and what will run.

If you have not registered at all and need to, please email Paula at paula.bent@simmons.edu with your ID number and what classes you want to register for and she will take care of it.

Online Tutoring

Online tutoring takes place through e-mail, instead of face-to-face in the Writing Center. It involves you sending an email with your document attached to our online tutor. She, in turn, will read your writing and give you feedback in the form of inserted comments. She will then email your document back to you, and you are ready to begin revisions!

Like our face-to-face tutors, the online tutor will look for patterns in your writing and comment on issues such as organization, clarity, grammar, and documentation. In addition to her comments, the tutor may refer you to outside resources to get additional practice on issues such as grammar or documentation.

For more information please visit  http://my.simmons.edu/academics/writing-center/burns/online-tutoring.shtml

Simmons SOM Spring Phonathon Part II

Tuesday, April 1, 2008, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Thursday, April 3, 2008, 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM Simmons College, 300 the Fenway, Boston MA Advancement Hall, 4th Floor of the Beatley Library Building

The Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (ODAR) would like to thank Heather Lantz for her service and leadership as a volunteer for the SOM Spring Phonathon Part I. Together with SOM alumnae and staff, Heather raised much needed support on behalf of the Simmons Fund for the SOM. Thank you Heather!

ODAR is currently seeking volunteers for Part II of our Spring Phonathon on the evenings of Tuesday, April 1 and Thursday, April 3. Phonathons are an important component of achieving our fundraising goals, and also provide a great opportunity for students to meet and interact with SOM alumnae who also volunteer for the phonathon. We begin each night with training, so even if you have never volunteered before, you will be comfortable on the phone. In fact, our Phonathons are a wonderful opportunity for you to sharpen your fundraising and networking skills, which are useful in any field. Please join us to help the SOM reach its goals for 2008. This year's priorities include: strengthening Institutional Growth and Stature, expanding our Global Presence, integrating Innovative Teaching through Technology and adding electives focused on Corporate Social Responsibility. We will provide parking, delicious refreshments, and good spirit to our volunteer callers. Check your calendars and contact Abbie Mohlin at 617.521.3825 or abigail.mohlin@simmons.edu to volunteer.

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu  by April 11, 2008 for “Unmasking Masculinity

Creating Your Own Internship

When you go out to eat, do you prefer to go to restaurants where you can get your food to order (sauce on the side, hold the anchovies, medium rare, etc.), or where you can actually prepare it yourself (salad bars, buffets, select your steak or lobster, build your own sundae, etc.)? If you think about it, how many restaurants don’t allow you to customize your meal in some way? Can’t think of any, can you?
