MBA Office Updates

Note From Mary D.

This week for many night students seems to be as bad as last week was for day students!! Many students came of a demanding LGA assignment and others a QA midterm. But next week marks week 10 of the spring term. It is a trying time for some cohorts of students, so take it day to day. I was told last night that it is 156 days to graduation, so for some the countdown is officially on!! For everyone else, it is take it one day at a time and try and keep everything in perspective and as balanced as you can!

Quotes of the Week

“In the middle of every difficulty, there lies opportunity:”
~~Albert Einstein

“The pessimist sees difficulty in every opportunity, the optimist sees opportunity in every difficulty”
~~Winston Churchill

And from Teresa Nelson!!

“Gustav Aschenbach was the writer who spoke for all those who work on the brink of exhaustion, who labor and are heavy-laden, who are worn out already but still stand upright, all those moralists of achievement who are slight of stature and scanty of resources, but who yet, by some ecstasy of the will and by wise husbandry, manage at least for a time to force their work into a semblance of greatness.” Original quote by Thomas Mann

International Women’s Day And Our International Students

March 8 is international women’s day which has become a global celebration of all that women have accomplished and a reminder of the importance of continuing to work together to help progress continue and make sure that young girls have the brightest future possible. I urge all of you to go to the various websites and read the history of what has happened, the role of the United Nations in their efforts to promote women, and how different countries celebrate this day. It is a moment for us to also celebrate how central our mission of educating women for power and principled leadership remains.

It is also a day to celebrate our group of international women who attend the SOM. Many are here for the first time, and many others have left their homes and families to come to the US to work, go to school, and improve the future for themselves, their families and their countries. Our program is tough on its own, but add the layer of learning and writing in a language that is not your first, and being in a different type of classroom and cultural environment than you grew up with. I admire each of them tremendously for the decisions they have made to come to the SOM, many with little or no support systems here, some with families back home or elsewhere that are caring for their children while they are in school; all with the same goal of making a difference for themselves and others. They are wonderful role models for all of us.

News & Events

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Date: Tuesday, March 25, 2008

Time: 12 noon – 1:30PM

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Boris Groysberg, Harvard Business School

Topic: Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?

Professor Groysberg's research focuses on the challenges of managing professional service firms, especially how firms develop, hire, retain, and utilize star knowledge workers. In this presentation he will discuss the issue of portability and the surprising findings from a study of investment banking professionals that women are able to maintain their star rankings more reliably than men after changing employers.  It appears that there are a number of things that occur in the process of becoming stars that make female analysts portable in a way their male colleagues are not.  Professor Groysburg will discuss these factors and lead a discussion about the practical implications of his findings for women, men and the field of knowledge work.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu by March 21, 2008 for “Women and Portability: Why is women's star performance more portable than men's?”

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.

>>Please RSVP to cgo@simmons.edu  by April 11, 2008 for “Unmasking Masculinity
