MBA Office Updates

Note From Mary D.

As we come down to the last week of the semester, I must admit that I have seen many tired faces around Mockler this week!! The final push is on as we have one week left. Please know that we have extended hours that the SOM will be open for extra study time and presentation practice time. I saw the first round of the marketing presentations this week and as always, they were terrific! Accounting, Finance, QA, Econ finals, just to name a few are looming for many of you and my analogy will relate to the Final Four basketball games that happened for men and women this week. They were terrific games and all four teams were prepared and gave it everything they had. At the end of next week, that is the question you will need to ask yourself. Did you give it everything you could, and did you believe you were ready? Most often, MBA students will tell me they were and when that is the case, the outcome is usually just fine!! Believe in yourself, know that grades don’t necessarily reflect all the learning that has occurred for you throughout the semester. Ironically you often don’t realize how much you learned in a class until you get to the next class that requires that knowledge and skills.

Quotes of the week

“It is not the hours you put in, but what you put into the hours”
~~Unknown

“Once can define discipline as doing what you have to do, doing it as well as you possibly can, and doing it that way all the time”

“If you don’t have the time to do it right, when will you have the time to do it over?”
~~John Wooden

SDM Important Information and Deadlines

This is a reminder that if you are taking SDM in the Summer you must register on MarketStrat ASAP even before the deadline in order to be assigned to a team! The Initial Assignments will be in your mailboxes by Friday April 11th. Please read below for important timing information.

*BY APRIL 4TH*

This is the deadline for purchasing the “Markstrat Online Student Manual.” You will need to buy a manual in either hardcopy or electronic format in order to register as a Markstrat software user (see below).

Each manual comes with a unique individual code (a “license number”).

Codes are only valid for one user, and for a single use. This means you are required to buy a new manual, and cannot share a manual or use a used copy. You have two options for purchasing your manual.

*BY APRIL 11TH*

Make sure that you are registered on the Markstrat website. You will need your manual to do this. To register, go to www.markstratonline.com <http://www.markstratonline.com>, click on “Student Login” and follow the instructions. You will need to enter the license number and the course ID # A84239. This registration is in addition to both your SOM course registration and the Markstrat website registration used to login.

*BEFORE APRIL 29TH*

Read the manual and practice, practice, practice. Every semester, student course evaluations stress the importance of reading the manual and practicing with the software before the first day of class. I totally agree, practicing will make a huge difference when you begin the actual coursework and is well worth the time spent beforehand. The manual tells you how to access and use the “practice” industry to familiarize yourself with the some of the simulation screens and tools.

Please do this! While you can expect to be confused at first, the more you practice, the better prepared you will be for your team. Unfortunately for Mac users, the software will only work on PCs.

SOM Open Friday Night And Sunday For Studying

Because we are heading into the final week of the semester and you're studying for exams & preparing final deliverables, we are extending the building hours on Friday night and part of Sunday (see below for weekend schedule).

  • Friday: 8:30am-9:30pm (Access 7am-9:30pm)
  • Saturday: 9:00am-5:00pm (Access 7am-5:00pm; usual hours)
  • Sunday: 12:00-5:00pm    (Access 12-5pm)

Please note, that the building will be locked during these extended hours and you will need your ID to access either the 409 Front Door or the 411 Library Door.

This panel discussion explores the world of socially responsible investing, from options for retirement to different methods of screening companies for inclusion in a fund.  Its focus is to facilitate informed investment decisions and it is a response to the explosive growth of “green” funds in the marketplace.  Currently, there is over 2.7 trillion socially responsible investment dollars in the US universe of managed assets, which represents one out of every nine dollars invested. Over the last two years, an average of one new socially responsible fund is launched every two weeks.  It is critical to distinguish between good marketing and good funds.  The information will be useful to all level of investors, from those considering entering the equity markets for the first time, to the more seasoned mutual fund investors.  After attending the panel, the audience will be empowered to begin researching SRI alternatives for their own portfolios.

Gary Kelly is CEO and vice chairman of Southwest Airlines, a Fortune 500 company with 34 consecutive years of profitability. A 20- year veteran of Southwest, Kelly worked closely with the airline’s legendary chairman, Herb Kelleher, to build the nation’s undisputed low-fare leader. After joining the company as controller, Kelly was quickly promoted to CFO, guiding Southwest’s financials and locking in long term fuel contracts that have saved the airline billions of dollars. His forward thinking and robust management style have delivered Southwest into a period of expansion while competitors have struggled with bankruptcy and restructuring – leading Fortune Magazine to list Southwest among America’s 10 most admired companies for the 10th year in a row.

Kelly has also been attentive to the customer, following through on promises to cut prices, increase flight frequency, and enhance the flying experience. His success was recognized by the Department of Transportation, which named Southwest “#1 in Customer Satisfaction” in 2006. A Texas native and graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, Kelly is a CPA by training and previously worked as an audit manager at Arthur Young & Company in Dallas, and as controller at Systems Center, Inc. He is a member of the Financial Executives Institute, the McCombs School of Accounting Advisory Board, and the Advisory Council of the University of Texas at Austin.

The Center for Gender in Organizations Winter/ Spring 2008 Distinguished Scholar Speaker Series,

Date: Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Time: 12 noon- 1:30pm

Place: 409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA in Green Room

Speaker: Professor Robin Ely, Harvard Business School

Topic: Unmasking Masculinity

For years, CGO has been helping organizations relax gendered norms that are a barrier to equity and effectiveness. This presentation is a case study of offshore oil platforms where the company accomplished this on its own by focusing solely on effectiveness.  Offshore oil rigs may seem an unlikely place to relax the masculine gendering of work norms.  Yet, this is exactly the environment in which researcher Robin Ely and co-investigator Debra Meyerson found men proactively adopting traditionally non-masculine work behaviors such as acknowledging physical limitations, expressing vulnerability and attending to their own and others emotions.
