This weekend, if you are working or attending the Leadership conference, you have a special opportunity to listen and learn from some spectacular women who are leaders in their fields. It is wonderful professional development opportunity that will enrich your classroom experience and I look forward to talking with many of you next week about the person or session that resonated with each of you!!

It is also a day that you are proud to be part of the SOM community. For those of you in Operations, it is great case study of an extremely well designed and managed event, where nothing is left to chance. Plus, I wear a suit and shoes and that fact alone is worth coming to see!!

Sometime between 5:30pm on May 1 and 8:30am on May 2, there was another break-in within the SOM buildings, this time it was the Executive Education offices. All Executive Education offices were entered, drawers ransacked, and walkie-talkies were stolen. We are investigating this incident and if any one has any information that could help us, please let Karen or Mary D. know.

Leadership Conference Updates

*Schedules and the training session list have been emailed and added to WebCT. Please be sure to check your email and Leadership WebCT.

*We have record breaking attendance for the leadership conference next year and for the first time have topped 3000 attendees. It will be a terrific day and we are so appreciative of all the student and staff volunteers that help make the day such a success. We couldn’t do it without you!

Red Sox Schedule

April marks the beginning of the Red Sox home games for this year. As much as we love them, parking around the area when there is a home game is really difficult and students get frustrated really quickly. Please allow ample time when coming to class on home games.

News & Events

SAVE THE DATE – MAY 9th, 2007
The Center for Gender in Organizations

Spring 2007 Distinguished Research Scholar Lecture Series

hosted by

Professor Joyce K. Fletcher, Distinguished Research Scholar

Simmons School of Management

409 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA.

This lecture series highlights new, cutting-edge research that is relevant to CGO's

Fourth Frame perspective on gender issues in the workplace.  Each lecture will link theory and practice by offering an opportunity to discuss practical implications of the findings and apply them to our own situation.

Date: May 9, 2007
Time: 12-1:30pm in the Green Room
Speaker and Topic:  Laura Morgan Roberts, Ph.D., “Women at their Best: Authentically Engaging Strengths for Maximal Contributions.”

Discussions of gender in the workplace often compare the experiences of women and men, focusing on women’s inadequacies and deficits. Author Laura Morgan Roberts offers a new, strength-based lens for examining gender and diversity in organizations. The discussion will be drawn from research on how white women and women of color cultivate a deeper understanding of their “best-self” and engage their strengths to mobilize change, build relationships, and persist in the face of obstacles.

Please RSVP by May 8 for “Women at their Best” to cgo@simmons.edu.

Date: June 19, 2007

Time: 4:30-6pm. in the Purple Room

Speakers and Topic: Mary Shapiro and Cynthia Ingols, Ph.D., “Opting In" vs. "Opting Out”

We hear a lot about professional women opting out of today’s high level jobs. But there's another, untold side to this story.  Come hear findings from a recent SOM study of 400 women who are not “opting out.” The findings indicate that these women are using workplace flexibility to "Opt In" to challenging jobs without sacrificing high salaries or career opportunities. Authors and Simmons professors Mary Shapiro and Cynthia Ingols will discuss findings from the study they conducted with Professor Stacy Blake Beard.
