Quotes of the Week

"Success has a price tag on it, and the tag reads courage, determination, discipline, risk taking, perseverance, and consistency--doing the right things for the right reasons and not just when we feel like it." --James M. Meston

Operations Updates

This week we had a fire alarm at the SOM in the 411 building on the 5th floor due to some burning popcorn in the microwave. I need to remind all students that when these alarms sound, you need to leave the building, regardless of what you are doing. These are old buildings and most of you were not around when a building on our street caught fire a few years ago. The fire spread through that building in minutes and did major damage. We are told that the time span that we have to get out of the building in a real fire is less than five minutes. Do not assume it is a false alarm and get your friends to leave with you. We have a lot of faculty, staff and students in these buildings all the time and we need everyone following the same protocols. Your safety is unbelievably important to me and I need you all to understand how serious it is when these alarms sound.

Graduation Updates

Voting for graduation speakers and Pat Miller Awards will close this Friday. There are still 10-15 students that have not voted and we encourage you to go on Zoomerang and vote for your fellow students.

Curriculum Committee Updates for Next Year

Technology and Operations will move from a fall day section to a spring day section. BGGE will move from a spring day section to a summer day section. No night section changes will occur in 2007-08.

In the fall of 2008, the MBA program will launch a 16 month day track that will begin in September.

Breaking Into Your Dream Industry When You Lack Superstar Skills

Excerpt:

It's important to demonstrate your passion for your dream industry in a professional manner -- and avoid coming across as a drooling wannabe. "Nobody is going to hire a groupie," says Flip Flippen, author of "The Flip Side: Break Free of the Behaviors That Hold You Back" (Springboard Press, 2007). "Employers aren't looking for fans; they're looking for producers."

Start by joining trade groups and attend the conferences, seminars and other events they host, says Alexandra Levit, author of the upcoming book, "How to Score THAT Gig" (Random House, 2008). By citing your membership to these organizations on your resume, you'll also boost your credibility, she adds.
