Note from Mary D.

As the semester winds into its last week, the cheers are going up from all classrooms as classes are ending for the summer! For many, the only thing left is the BGGE and OPS finals, and the Authentic Leadership final deliverables. Tune in next week as I try and wish our graduating students a fond farewell and some thoughts for those of you returning to think about at some point after you get some rest and relaxation!! I was in the BGGE presentations last week and this week, and for everyone that is in the program, you know what a great accomplishment it is to get through them, realize how much you have learned and how your perspective on your country and area of the world is forever changed by this course. The presentations were terrific as they always are, and a true reflection of lots of hard work and research.

Women’s Leadership and National Security

Date: Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Time: 7pm -9pm

Place: The Meeting Room at Two Arrow Street

Please join us on Tuesday, July 31st at 7pm in Cambridge as Marie Wilson, President and Founder of The White House Project, and Dana Eyre, Civil Affairs Officer for the Army Reserves, host our second Community Conversation “One Soldier’s Story of Change.”  Join us to listen to Marie and Dana discuss the ever-changing role of the military and the need to add more women in the national security pipeline. Our current national policy and budget priorities do not reflect a broad, deep and sustainable national security plan that can tackle everything from terrorism to climate change. Until now, we’ve only utilized half of our resources in the national security debate and it’s time for a change. Come hear Marie and Dana speak about the striking effect a critical mass of women can have on the national security debate.

RSVP, or for more information, contact Jaime Peters at jpeters@thewhitehouseproject.org

Why, in Vietnam, Women Are at Top of Corporate Heap

In 1968, 16-year-old Nguyen Thi Mai Thanh fled American forces in her native Saigon to work as a volunteer medic treating North Vietnamese troops led by her father, an army general, in the jungle outside the city. Later she contracted malaria and escaped north by walking several hours every day along the Ho Chi Minh trail. She dodged U.S. air attacks and saw other Vietnamese killed or ripped apart by bombs.

Today, life has improved markedly for the 54-year-old Ms. Mai Thanh. As chairwoman and chief executive of Ree Corp., a home-appliance, construction and real-estate company, she is one of Vietnam's most successful -- and wealthiest -- businesswomen. Earlier this year, a business magazine here ranked her the ninth-richest person in Vietnam, with a net worth of an estimated 887 billion Vietnamese dong, around $55 million.
