Note From Mary D.

As I talked with day and evening students this week, it is clear that you are starting to get busier with schoolwork and are spending parts of your weekends doing work. I would encourage all of you to remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint and that you must develop good strategies for balancing work, school, family, and breaks to keep you sane!! It will be a bit of a see-saw in the next few weeks as new students will experiment with econ problem sets, accounting problems, and all the reading and prep for classes. You will find the right rhythms that work for you and if you find something works-keep it and if it doesn’t-try something new!! Even for returning students, each semester is a different pace and requires some adjustments being back in school after a few weeks off. Again, balance is important for everyone!!

MBA Office Staff Announcement

Please join us in welcoming Paola Mateo as the new Coordinator for SOM Operations and Course Support in the MBA Office.  Paola recently earned her undergraduate degree in Political Science and Spanish from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.  As an undergraduate student, Paola was very active and brings to Simmons an array of experience in customer service and student support.   We are thrilled with her passion for education which is evident in the English Writing and Computer Literacy summer program she helped launch in the Dominican Republic.  We are delighted to welcome Paola who will maintain a 10am – 6pm work schedule or 12pm – 8pm when student coverage is not available.

Note to the New Part Time Evening Program

We wanted to thank all of you for the card, picture and frame that was given to us at the end of Foundations 2007 from the evening class. The picture is in the MBA office on our mantel and is a great picture of all of you! It was a wonderful and unexpected gesture on your parts and very much appreciated!

Important Update Regarding the SOM Bookstore

Due to a shortage in available staff members, the SOM bookstore will no longer be open on Tuesday, September 18th. This means that Monday, September 17th is now the last day of the fall semester that the bookstore will be available on the SOM campus. If you were planning on coming to the bookstore on Tuesday, please call 617-521-2054 or email bkssimmons@bncollege.com and we will do our best to assist you. We thank you for your understanding, and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

MBA Office Changes

The new cohorts have heard this in Foundations, but for returning students this will be lots of news for you, all good!! I have taken over the administrative operations in the UG program as of July 1. This change means that both programs will run under a conceptual umbrella of SOM Academic Programs, so we are all still working together, we will just be operating on two different campuses. It is a big change for all of us as it is basically doubling the size of the student body we work with and the number of faculty, but we are all very excited!!

As a result, my time will be now split between both campuses and the plan is for me to be on the MBA side on Mondays and Wednesdays and the UG side on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Fridays will be the swing day!

Paula has moved to the UG campus and her job will stay as manager of program operations but has expanded to include both programs.

Carolyn will stay on Comm. Ave. and her job has also expanded as manager of course support to cover both programs. Her shift will switch to the day shift, 8:30-4:30pm.

Darla Pires-DeGrace has moved from Associate Director in MBA Admissions to our team as of this week and we are thrilled to have her join us. She will be your primary person for advising, community building, and a zillion other things!

Katlyn, our student worker, has moved to the main campus with Paula and we have hired 2 new great students, Jocelyn and Carmel. We have completed interviews for a new coordinator and that will hopefully be finalized by Friday.

Karen and Kirsten are still in Operations and Special Events holding down all of those fronts!

We are totally committed to the same levels of customer service, student interaction and faculty support as always and look forward to working with you as we start this new chapter!! –Mary D.

Student Clubs

Specific strategies for those linkages to be determined by the group. Any and all students welcome! Call for a Negotiation Student Leader

For any student interested in leading a student group in negotiation and conflict resolution at SOM, there is an upcoming opportunity of interest. The Program on Negotiation (at Harvard Law School) has a Student Leaders group which is an informal network of about 12-15 graduate students - one or two students from each of several Boston-area schools -who are highly involved or very interested in negotiation and conflict resolution. At some schools the designates are chairs of a negotiation club (e.g. Fletcher, Harvard Law School); at other schools, they are representatives of an entire conflict resolution program (e.g. Brandeis, UMass). The meeting is on Monday, September 10th, from 6pm - 8pm. Please contact beth.doherty@simmons.edu if you are interested.

Student Academic Council

The Student Academic Council (SAC) has been in existence since at least 1997. In its early form, it was an elected group of students with a mission to enhance students' educational experience inside and outside of the classroom, as they prepare for positions of power and leadership. This remains the current mission and clearly supports the SOM mission.

It is important to note that your time commitment will be minimal. You will comment on things you have an opinion about or you know others have an opinion about. It is ok to ask your peers as I do see you as a representative group. If there is a time deadline, I will be really clear about it, but most often you will have a week or so to react to the issue on the table. We'll have a lot of fun and you will be exposed to some interesting issues, problems, etc. If you would like to join the SAC please let Paula know at paula.bent@simmons.edu.
