MBA Office Updates

Note From Mary D.

As we are a school of principled leadership, it is hard to ignore the Patriots videotaping of other team signals. (For our international students the Patriots are the local professional football team.)

To me, what the coach of the Patriots did was inexcusable because it was a conscious decision to violate league rules and protocols. It was not a mistake, it was not a bad decision under stress, it was a calculated decision to use every advantage to have his team win, regardless of league rules. This is the opposite extreme of principled leadership and he has forever tarnished what was a wonderful image of a model team from its owners to the players and called into question all the great accomplishments of the last few years.

Marketing Research in Practice: MBA Assist for Faculty Research Project Needed

Professors Wilson, Nelson, and Marlino are working on a research project to better understand the relationship of career intentions/motivations and self confidence in relationship to the growth goals women entrepreneurs hold for their organizations. We would very much like to hire an MBA student to work with us being responsible for overseeing the implementation of an electronic survey to members of our partner organization. This will include pre-testing of the questionnaire designed by the faculty, and follow-up phone calls/emails to ensure a sufficient response rate. The student will also assist the faculty team in some analysis of the data. Great resume experience. Availability for follow-up calling during the day required. Standard MBA payment rates apply. Those interested, please email Teresa Nelson (teresa.nelson@simmons.edu). Thank you!

Entrepreneurship Program Seeking MBA Assist for Special Projects

The Entrepreneurship Program is looking for interested MBA students to assist in delivery of the program on a project basis including involvement with the Entrepreneurship Advisory Board, research projects on entrepreneurship topics, and a range of "what's going on" activities. Standard MBA payment rates apply. Mostly flexible scheduling. Those interested, please email Teresa Nelson (teresa.nelson@simmons.edu). Thank you!

Volunteers Needed for Semi-Finals and Finals Round of the Silverman Business Plan Competition

Fiona Wilson, Faculty Director, Silverman Business Plan Competition, and the Entrepreneurship Initiative at SOM are looking for students who would like to volunteer to assist at the semi-final (Thursday, October 4, 2007 from 5:30 – 9:00 pm) and final round of the Silverman Business Plan Competition (Friday, October 12, 4:00 – 6:30pm) For the semi—finals, we need students who are willing to be official time keepers and escorts for the semi-finalists. This is a great opportunity for anyone who would like exposure to professional level business plan presentations, as this event is not open to the public and the only way for students to attend is via this opportunity. For the finals we also need escorts and a time keeper. Please email entrepreneurship@simmons.edu if you are interested no later than 9/23.

Nail that job! 7 tips for traveling for an interview

Congratulations! You've been asked to come in for an interview. Traveling to meet with a potential employer is no vacation, but it doesn't have to pack on additional stress.

"Be prepared for the interview itself. Traveling is stressful enough. You don't want to have to worry about both traveling and the interview," said Patrick Skelly, IBM program manager for university recruiting.

New Franchise Idea: Fewer Rules, More Difference

Excerpt: Franchises are sticklers for the cookie-cutter approach. Rules and processes are set down for owners buying into a uniform system. The decor has to be set just so; the products have to be prepared a certain way; and all signage needs to be consistent.

But a crop of franchisers are taking a very different approach: They are giving their franchisees some freedom to run their own operations, much like an independent small business -- from personalizing store names and menus to fiddling with prices.
